Yesterday, my one cat Chet was just fine and dandy, sleeping up in the loft of the barn. I fed my dogs and Chet jumped down from the loft to his feeding table and all was well. About two hours later, I was on the front porch and he comes Chet from the side yard. His eye is all runny, and there is something sticking out of his head....its a claw.....like a cat's claw...I have no idea what happened....any ideas. We do live inthe country and he loves to climb trees...he is neutered...there are other cats around, but no signs of wounds on Chet. Ive looked at his paws this am and one foot is ok, the other is missing part of the claw....only a small pointy piece is there. His eye is not runny, but he does close it more than normal...Ive made some tear water for his eye and treated his paw with peroxide, no foaming, so its not cut....any ideas...at all. thanks..

Was the funky claw from his back foot or front foot? If it was from his back foot, he may have accidentally injured himself while scratching his head. Keep an eye on it and if it starts getting worse, I'd take him to the vet. He may have scratched his eye which is not good. Hope he is okay! Do let us know.

I was thinking the same thing. Keep an eye on him - especially his eye, and if you notice anything unusual, I would suggest a vet visit might be in order..

I hope he'll be okay!

Hmmm, that is a mystery! I would just keep an eye on him and take him to the vet if anything else develops or gets worse

Thanks everyone for your answers and concern. The claw is the front foot. His eye is not running but he still closes it like a long blink. He is acting like he usually does, not like he is injured anywhere. I really checked him over good and no injury and he even let me check the front foot...one claw is gone and the other is real small...I will keep a check on his eye...it doesnot look like conjunctivitis or whatever you call the eye thing cats get...ive seen that before. Again, thanks for your concern and help....

He could have gotten some dirt or debris into his eye and it may be irritating it. As for the claw...

Update on my cat Chet. His eye is still bothering him.. its a little runny, only enough to wipe the little bit of whatever when I see him thorougt the day. He is a barn cat. Today, I really looked at his eye and it looks scratched. Almost like a tear on the eye ball, just inside the yellow colored part, not the black middle of his eye.. Guess he should go to the vet...Ive been using tear water since the 9th and today I started using a sterile type visine....will this repair itself..or is it to the vet???? any help

Please take him to the vet! A scratched cornea can turn into an ulcer quickly and he could lose that eye if he doesn't have the correct type of meds. With him being a barn kitty, he definitely will need antibiotics. Poor kitty. Let us knw what the vets says!

I agree, if his eye is still bothering him he should be started on a course of antibiotics soon to avoid or combat infection.

yeah, vet for sure with the eye.

Was the claw just a casing? Like the outer layer of a claw. If so that is just part of the normal shedding process, and somehow he got it stuck on his head.

If treated the eye can most definitely heal. So dont worry to much about that.

Keep us posted!

The claw was just a casting....youre right there. I never thought of that. I guess I will call the vet today and see what he says....my husband says it will heal on its own, but then he is not a vet...vet it is...thanks everyone.

Took Chet to the vet this am..Chet has an ocular ulcer...The vet gave him two shots and gave me two tubes of meds to apply to Chet's eye. Vet says if not better, by Monday, call him. I feel so bad that I let my poor cat suffer for a week. Its amazing how much a cat can take and still show you affection. Altho this am he was somewhat sluggish, he wouldnt come when I called but I found where he was sleeping and his eye did look bad. Thanks again to everyone who gave me advise..

Almost all men think it's nothing serious and "will heal on its' own", and that us women worry way too much.
(sorry, guys!) That's why God created women: someone has to worry!

I'm glad that you took him to the vet, and that your furbaby is getting proper care now.
I hope he'll continue to improve!

Glad to here you got him to the vet.
With the meds it should heal good now. No infection, which would be a cause of lots of eye problems.
Let us know his progress.

Hehe, in my situation I think the man(me) is the only one who thinks things are serious. My girlfriend is the one who says, oh everything will heal on its own.
Nobody believed me when I found my kittens cataracts. Even the vet told me not to worry about his eyes! I was vigilant though, and took my cat two two more vets and an eye specialist who all agreed with me.

Anyhow here are some for a speedy and uneventful recovery.

Thanks everyone and Im glad I took Chet to the vet. He slept most of the day yesterday and today I will let him come inside so I can make sure to give him the eye goop 4 times..He loves inside, even tho is an outdoor cat. He will let me know when he wants out, even if Im sleeping..He's a character..When he first showed up as a kitten, I couldnt think of a name so I just said, "come on" and he would come....so that was his name for a couple of weeks. He'd follow me all over the farm and today when I call "Come On", of course kinda singing it...he will come a running...So thanks everyone and this is a great site. Once I figure out how to upload a pic of Chet, I will. thanks again
