Well, it's finally happened. After catching mostly feral cats, a few squirrels, one raccoon, and one very confused possum... I have finally accidentally caught a skunk.

Now what.

I can't just walk over and open the cage for him like I do for the squirrels and raccoons. I called the city animal control and they said they'll only come get him if I let them take the trap too, but the trap isn't mine, it belongs to my local animal shelter. I can't afford to pay them for the confiscated trap.

So, any advice on how to release this skunk myself? I have to do it soon because it's nighttime and it's very cold outside here in Chicago... don't want the little guy to freeze.

Thanks!

Can you contact the animal shelter where you got the trap and see if they have any advice on how to handle the situation? If you approach you could get sprayed. Phew!!!!

Or call a pest control company and ask for advice. Maybe they would help you release the skunk for a fee... tho' it may be more $$$$ than the trap!

Got him out. All I had to do was throw a blanket over the cage first, then open the door and leave. He took right off.
Silly little critter.
