Thanks

Plus they're so big compared to the other two, they have 2 weeks difference or so and they weight twice the Siamese!

I'm a Pentaxian, so I own a K10D, but there are many good SLR cameras out there! Unfortunately photography is one of the artistic hobbies where equipment counts the most toward quality, and it's expansive as well!

The K10D body alone is approx 800$, yet the lens I had on the camera when I took these is the renowned and excellent 77mm f/1.8 FA Limited and costs just as much! It's ALWAYS better to get good lenses (among photographers we say glass, as in, buy good glass over good camera).

A good lens on a less good camera will take amazing pictures, whereas a good camera with a cheap lens will yield average results.

In the K10D pricerange, the Rebel XTi from Canon is good.

Imho Nikkon, Canon and Pentax are the top three SLR camera makers. Nikkon is really the choice of many pros, they have amazing cameras and lenses, but they're expansive!

You can have a look at the sticky here on some tips on how to shoot, and if you're curious about Pentax products, feel free to PM me
Sigav is our Nikkon resident I believe. As a Pentaxian I won't be of much help for Canon or Nikkon products!

Thanks for looking and your comments

Edit: The K100D is the little brother of the K10D, and with the kit lens 18-55mm, it's a GREAT package and an amazing deal for your first SLR!

Yay! more photos and these really are excellent. You are right as well in the impressive claws most bengals tend to have. The ALC is a tree climber and bengals usually have big paws with big claws on them.

However as you've seen they can control them, fortunately, and that control only gets more impressive as they age. The only time I get scratched by Nikita these days is if I play rough with her without my leather glove and really, then it's my fault.

As for how I managed my photos, a bright room and a big window.. in addition to some post work to brighten photos and the noise reduction if needed. I found that 1/125 shutter is ok to mostly freeze and 1/250 needed for better frozen action shots. Having a bit of blur then can be better though, gives a sense of speed. Still basically I can't take good photos without daylight helping me. So now in the middle of the winter my photo taking window is very short.

I think I was usually at ISO 400, pushed to 800 if needed. I hardly ever go all the way up to 1600 although maybe I should.

And for people asking about cameras. I'm a Nikon person. I really like those cameras. Their entry level digital SLR camera is the Nikon D40. It along with the 18-55mm kit lens it comes with is a pretty good deal. The only drawback with it is that it won't autofocus with all Nikon lenses. For a beginner that's not a huge drawback though since odds are that when you'd want to invest heavily in more and more lenses you'd be upgrading the body as well. (The Nikon D40 with its kit lens is quite a bit cheaper than a lot if not most lenses)

Back to the cats, I'm really really enjoying seeing your photos. Their personalities are shining through and that'll only get better as you get to know them better and they grow up.

Yeppers, Nikkon is the way to go for pros and those who have fat wallets
You can be on a budget and own a Nikkon body, but for entry level SLR, imho, the Rebel XTi and the K10D are better choices!

When I opened those RAW files (have a look at my bengals in the tree thread) there was such a crapload of noise I thought it was snowing! I really hate ISO1600... I'm a perfectionist and even NeatImage doesn't always work!

I could have either kept ISO at 400 or 800 and opened the lens up even more, but those were all shot at f/4... after this you lose so much DOF when you're close it ruins the photo. Especially with the tree photos, I didn't have time to plug the flash in. I avoid ISO1600 like the pest, but like you said, you really need 1/250 to freeze playing kitties properly, and I rarely get that kind of shutter speed indoor even in broad delight without a flash. Although, my AF540Z bounced off the ceiling as fill during the day creates a nice light and allows me to keep the ISO down, but then, the recharge time for the flash is slower than the shutter itself, which is something I hate!

Do you have a fix for this?
Outside of using studio strobes!
