My 8 month old kitten Sundance is off his food again. So far he hasnt eaten for 15 hours. He's now at the vets to make sure he stays hydrated and stuff. This is the third time hes gone off his food in about 3 months. I dont know why and the vets also cant figure it out. Weve done x-rays, blood test, ultrasounds and everything else the vet has said might help find out whats wrong with him

He seems to be healthy in every way other then he hardly ever eats much and sometimes refuses to eat for days. At which point he goes to the vets and seems to start eating after a couple days-1 week. The vet is still trying to figure it out but have come up with nothing.

His only other symptom is when he doesnt eat he seems to have an overload of saliva and it has a brownish tinge. His teeth are fine and he has no ulcers in his mouth.

Any ideas at all? We are grasping at straws at this point.

I had a cat with a similiar problem. She stopped eating and was hiding in the basement. After many of the same tests she was just given some appetite enhancement pills which worked right away and she was fine after that. We never did find out what the problem was but it was solved and that was great!

WHat is the cat eating....?? It sounds like a intolerance issue ... ie not a full blown allergy but can cause major issues

1. Science Diet kitten. Which he was fed whil he was still my foster kitten. He didnt do good on it at all. Always alot smaller then all the other kittens.

2. EVO for a week. The he stopped eating for a couple days and so we switched too...

3. Science Diet Sesitive Stomach per vets request was on that for 1 month but threw up most of the little that he ate. Stopped eating again

4. Then the vet switched him over to the Wysong per advice of a specialist. And hes been on that for 3 weeks. He's been doing really good. Fur had been looking great, getting to a nice weight and just doing great. Nothing changed at all.

Background on him he was a feral kitten. Mom weaned him onto hot dog, hamburgers and anything else she could nab out of the trash.

I caught him, his mom and two brothers when the kittens were 7 weeks old. One kitten died of hydrocephelus the day I caught him. Another kitten from the litter was found dead a couple days before also from hydrocephelus.

Mom is slightly phsycotic (not joking) and him and his brother that survived have always seemed a bit off. Not to bright, a little ackward but in general healthy.

I am guessing and is just that .. he might have a chicken intolerance... animals are much better at this than human animals of knowing that something makes them feel icky

Wow. What a frustrating predicament.

Maybe it's a birth defect? Maybe he has bouts of anosmia?

I do hope it's something as simple as a food intolerance.

Natural Balance just came out with allergy formula wet & dry food. They have no wheat, barley, rice, or corn. They have:

Green Pea & Duck Dry
Green Pea & Duck Wet
Venison & Green Pea Wet

I was going to suggest Iams Kitten because it has tiny kibble and I've never seen a kitten not like it. Problem is that it has chicken in it and it sounds like that is an issue.

You could try sprinkling a little bit of cheese on top of the food to entice him to eat, or catnip or something.

sounds like IBS maybe??

have you tried a raw diet?
IBS canines and felines have great success with raw diets.

my mother-in-law just spent a year and $2500 on her furbaby to find out what was wrong with her. She's now on a raw diet and doing fantastic.
