Singing in choirs, I've come to love so much wonderful Christmas music -- O Holy Night
is magical, especially when you're singing with a few hundred other voices, and I love Carol of the Bells
, too... and Angels We Have Heard On High
is fun with all the harmonies in the glorias... and there's a little-known choral piece called Carol From An Irish Cabin
that's very simple and almost eerie, a beautiful song...
But my all-time favorite is always Silent Night,
especially in the original German. I count it as one of the most beautiful melodies ever written... and I have a precious memory of hearing it sung and played by an old German man with a guitar, who climbed up and down the stairwells of our Stuttgart apartment building one Christmas Eve, caroling for all the Army families when I was very small.
