Over the last 5 years, my family has started a new Christmas tradition. Instead of overindulging ourselves on Christmas Eve, we now (as a family, including the grandchildren) volunteer our time at an out of the cold program. We help cook the food, serve and clean up afterwards.

IMO it is by far the best Christmas gift I give.

So, if you want to help, follow my family's lead and give your time to those who really need it.

Wow! Such stories.
We never went hungry, but my late Dad was a Longshoreman and they went on a Long strike - he was working at a sugar refining factory. The AFL-CIO local sent us food stamps. My Mom didn't want to use them because she was embarrassed until I was on line at the checkout with her. She looked at me and gave the stamps to the checker. I love my Mom.

THAT is FANTASTIC.
THank you so much for doing that!

Yes, when I was growing up we were very poor. One year we had bologna for Thanksgiving because that's all we could afford. We ate potatoes a lot because they were fairly cheap and filling. Surprising, I still love potatoes.

I think what you do is simply wonderful. It's the true meaning of Christmas.

Throughout college I would frequently have a bowl of cereal for breakfast and either ramen noodles or mac'n'cheese for supper. Fortunately I became best friends with a guy lived with his parents. I'm ashamed to admit it now but I would mooch off his family several nights a week.

I really should look them up and give something back...

Or find a pay to pay it forward to someone else in need.

There is a lady I know who is rather poor. For Christmas, I am getting her a $25 gift card to Wal Mart, $25 to JCPenney, $25 gift card to a chinese restaurant(I Hope they have gift cards) & a $25 gift card to another fancy restaurant. She can then, hopefully, eat out at least 2x for each restaurant gift card, get herslef some new clothes & a few "essentials" in Wal Mart.

I used to have a coworker who had a wife and 3 kids. He and his wife combined weren't taking home much more than I was by myself. He and I would eat lunch together every couple of weeks or so and most times I would pay for both of us. He'd always say no but I'd pay anyway.

That being said, I may try to find them anyway. The last time I saw them was at his wedding 9-10 years ago.

They would probably be happy if you thanked them, and that you remembered their kindness even all these years later!
