Well I have a 6 month old Maine Coon and she received a rabies vaccination three days ago. Since the vaccination she has stopped eating, drinking and as of right now she is not able to walk. She is able to crawl but is unable to support herself totally upright with her hind legs. Right now we have her on an IV for fluids and a steroid to promote her appetite. Have any of you guys heard of this and if so whats going on and can it be fixed?

I am assuming the vet has seen her since she is on an IV, did he not give her anything to counteract it?

I have heard of cats having reactions, but Im not familiar with the specific reactions.

I've never heard of a reaction like this, but I'm sending you mucho vibes to hope he comes out of this OK.

The only thing I can add is that our cat went anorexic after being severely constipated (the medical term is ostipated, completely blocked with cement-hard stool). His vet was hesitant to prescribe a steroid, despite a lot of trauma and inflammation from the deostipation procedure (they basically had to sedate him and manually dig the stool out), because he was running a fever post-procedure, and she was afraid a steroid would mask signs of infection. By this point, Jesse had not eaten for over 72 hours and I was really fearful for his liver.

His vet gave him some cyprophetidine (sp.) and he began eating again. It is actually an antihistamine, but sometimes can jump-start the appetite enough to get them eating on their own again.

Ya he has seen her every day. Our vet is my moms fiance. He says that the fluids and the steroids are all she needs for right now because everything else is normal. He said it is a nervous system reaction and should clear up but it will just take time.

my maine coon had a bad reaction to her vaccinations also. she was given an atropine shot and i was told to keep an eye on her. she vomited EVERYWHERE! after the shot, she just hid under the bed. it was several days before she ate or drank anything.

My moggie Ginger has Maine Coon in her blood somewhere along the line, and she had a horrible reaction to her rabies shot, but no where NEAR that bad. I'm so sorry your poor baby and you are suffering like this!

In our case, my Ginger is to never ever receive another vax as long as she lives, according to my vet.

I would certainly talk to your vet to make sure you never have to put your furbaby through this again, and many, MANY vibes that she recovers fully and fast!
