My cat does this when she wants me to stop petting her or whatever. It's her way of communicating.

Some cats do this when they are overstimulated. Watch for signs that Kitty is getting tired of this - twitchy tail or muscles, restlessness... and stop. Time how long it takes and pet right up to his/her tolerance. Some say you can extend that time a little bit every day to build that tolerance, tho' this is not something I have ever tried myself.

The weird thing is there is no hard and fast rule to this. One of our cats will start to get overstimulated and ancy, which will eventually lead her to bite/swipe at you.

Another one of our cats never gets overstimulated, regardless of how much you pet them.

Zane will sometimes bite to get attention. When I'm getting dressed or undressed he'll run up and bit my ankles. This morning he jumped on the bed when I was getting up and bit me on the arm without any provocation.

I generally pet Hennessy a while and then let him lay on me for a while... then pet some more.

He's usually fine with me, but if it's someone new and exciting he can get a little restless.

Are you Petting or are you Patting?

Petting is slow soft strokes, which the cat enjoys, while bouncing our palm on their head is annoying. The cat might be trying to tell you something.

If he bites when you do that, don't do that!

Blossom doesn't like me patting ( the Aussie equivalent to petting) when I don't heed her warnings, she bites. She lets us pat near her chest, but go to her tummy & she bites. She's getting better, we can now get to her waist.

This is very true! It depends on the animal's personality.

Butzie has always give a little "bite" when she wants me to stop petting her. Lately, though, she has started doing more frequently to my husband and me. I am getting a little worried about this. It doesn't matter who or where but the cute nips to get us to stop (and we do!) have become worrisome to me.
