cat box recommendation?

hello,

i have an unusually large cat (he's around 35 pounds, and he's big & tall, as they say), and he seems to have some trouble staying tidy using the biggest enclosed cat pan i can find at my local retailers... i suspect he's just too big to do what he needs to do in there...

anyway, i was hoping someone would know of an online seller who offers oversized cat boxes, preferably covered, which might make his life a little easier... i see a lot of sites with pans marked as "lrge", "extra large" "jumbo" etc, but the ones we have are allegedly extra large already, so i'd prefer a recommendation of a product that someone can say from personal experience is unusually large instead of one that's just marketted that way...

thanks!

Hi Phio,

Most cats really do not like covered pans, it is the owners who like it because it contains the smell within.
Most cats want to be able to escape easily when they are in such a vulnerable position, and the covered litter boxes don't allow for that easy feeling they need.

I go to WalMart and buy those plastic tubs that slide underneath your bed where you put sweaters and stuff in them? I take the covers off of these tubs and use them, the cats love it, and I have never had litter box issues since switching away from the standard size pans to these tubs. Spray the bottom of the pan (before you put the litter in for the first time) with a coating of PAM Cooking spray, and every time you clean the boxes (meaning scrub them out and clean them) reapply this spray. Works great.

you don't have trouble with the cats tossing too much litter out of the pans without a cover? this is the reason i use them, they are out of the way enough that the odor isn't a concern...

I dont have a problem with the litter, I dont mind sweeping.

I also use the big litter pans like Hissy said and theres a LOT less litter being kicked out, it works. Peedoodle is a 'kicker' as well as Kahu!

I don't know if it is because I have feral cats and they are indoor/outdoor, but I have never had litter box issues until Geronimo came to town.
He was my litterbox diver. He would scramble up the cat post in the cat room and fling himself into the litter pans! Just a little black kitty litter diver.
He is now diving in the local feed store in town. LOL

But actually, I don't have problems, the worst thing is that when I get orphaned kittens in, they usually love to lay in the litter box, but they grow out of that behavior. I have a large piece of astroturf under the pans upstairs, and every so often, I roll it up and take it outside and shake it out and put it back.

I saw something at petsmart last weekend - it was some kind of mat with rubber/plastic things sticking up and it was a track stopper for underneath the litter pan - I wasnt sure if they were effective, or if the cats wouldnt mind that funny feeling under their feet?

Someone on this board recommended getting one of those high walled Rubbermaid storage bins (available at Walmart too) and it completely solved my (well my kitty's) sand kicking, poop on edge problems.
They have them in a variety of colors and sizes. If the walls are high enough, you don't need to have a covered litter box.

Maui, I think that was me who mentioned that. I use a very large Tupperware/Rubbermaid storage containers and it totally does the job for me. They still get some litter stuck to their feet when they jump out, but I have an old bath mat in front of the box so they land on that and hopefully it all stays in there. Then I just roll it up and shake it out outside.

I have had covered boxes. Now I have this huge thing from DrsFosterSmith called the litter box bench that my box is inside of. They STILL manage to get litter outside! I give up on that one.

Tamme,

If I hadn't read it here, it would have never occured to me to use anything other than an official litter box.

Thanks for helping me "see outside the box"! :tounge2:
