A beloved friend of nearly 18 years passed away this afternoon at 3:32 PM. It seems like only a couple of years ago that this lonely, scared kitten with a HUGE meow appeared from behind the bushes in the parking lot where I used to work and practically jumped into my arms.
Dirk's health had been declining steadily over the last year. The once active cat was slowed by arthritis and old age had taken most of his hearing. When I left for work this morning, I stroked his head and told him he was loved. He lifted his head briefly and scratched out a few purrs before laying his head back down to rest.
Even though I wasn't home at the time, I knew exactly when he crossed over. Something moved me to find an old picture I kept with me in my office of Dirk as a kitten. As I stared at the old photo of the adorable kitten with the enormous eyes, my wife called to tell me that he had just breathed his last.
Goodbye, sweet baby Dirk. I hope and pray that you knew how dearly you were loved.
