Hello there. Some of you may remember, we just got our new kitty Sasha about two weeks ago. Well, she is having litter box issues. We keep her in her own room (the guest bathroom) at night and let her out during the day to play. When she is in her room, she uses the litter box just fine, but when she is out and about in the house, she poops anywhere she can find a spot to go. I think it is because she can't find the box.
We don't want to keep her in the bathroom all the time because that doesn't help her figure out how to return to the box when she is out of the bathroom. And she cries if she is awake and alone in the bathroom.
What is the best way of going about training her to go look for the litter box when she is out of sight of it. Should we take the litter box around with her so she can see it? Then she might not learn that it will sometimes bewhere she can't see it?
Help...tonight she went poop in the living room chair when we turned our heads for a second! Yuck!

Thanks,
Ginger

She simply has not learned litter box manners from mom. I would add a few more litter boxes for her. Right after she eats, put her into a small room with a litter box and when she uses it, let her out Make sure you keep the boxes scooped and cleaned and scrubbed. Again, because you have multiple cats, you need multiple boxes. Buy different types of litter and experiment and see if she prefers one over the other.Any time you see her waste anywhere other than the litterbox, scoop it up and put it in the litterbox. Carry her over to the box and set her in it, but don't force her to stay and don't scratch the litter for her. She will catch on.

Ok I will go get her a couple more litter boxes today. The other 3 cats have their own few upstairs so she won't be up there to use them. I can put one of her new ones in the corner where she like to have accidents and leave one in her bathroom.
Before I thought it was best to have the one in the bathroom where she stays so she will learn to go there to use it and not have them scattered around the house.
I will try this hissy and see if it works, thanks for the good advice.

We got a new litter box for Sasha and we take it in whatever room she is in. It is working perfectly. She still uses the one in her bathroom when she is in there. And...she uses the new one whenever she is out and about playing. Hissy, thanks for the advice on getting her another box. It seems to be working great!

You're welcome, sometimes they just need a scenery change!
Seriously though, one cat should have two litter boxes, so when you have multiple cats, have multiple boxes as well.

I have 4 cats and 4 boxes now. Do you think that is enough. Two are the kittens and the other 3 share 2 boxes. Maybe I should get another one so they will all have thier own???

The rule of thumb that I've seen here is at least one box per cat. There should also be boxes on each floor of the house for them to choose from, especially if there is a kitten in the mix.
In small cat households (1-3 cats, generally) I've seen it suggested one box per cat plus one, so 2 cats should have three boxes.
