Well i have to say this has been going my whole life, in regards to my grandparents. My grandma (mums mum) is a pensioner, and has been on her own 4 years now. She gives us wonderful presents. She manages to find that something special as new. She also loves going to op shops, and she has found beautiful furniture and decorations that look brand new, but for alot less. I have had jewellery and vases and alot of gorgeous things from her which don't cost an arm and a leg. She doesn't have alot of people to buy for.

My nana and papa (dads parents) are also pensioners. Now i know it is harder for them as there are two people to feed, and papa has alot of health problems. My nana insists on getting presents for every grandchild and aunt and uncle that exists. I haven't been to her house for xmas since being with Tristan. I spent some 20 years going over there being ignored by one cousin who is always rude, obnoxious and flashing the expensive gifts his greek grandparents throw him. Getting lectures from christian relatives. Not to mention how horrid it actually is to squeeze 15 or so people into one dining room and nana insists on cooking up a huge fatty feast in the hot weather!

Oh yes onto the gifts lol. I haven't yet told my nana i dont want her to buy me anything, but as i havent been there for xmas in a few years, im assuming she's stopped buying me things. The worst give i got was a stinky $2 perfume and a magnet of a cat that said 'chin up'. Magnet was cute, sentiment wasn't.

It would be better for her to save her money and keep it for herself. I can't think of anything memorable in my lifetime from her, and id rather not get anything at all. She has never in my life actrually asked what i like or what i want, she has no idea what hobbies and things im interested in. But shes somehow managed to buy really cool and costly presents for the other cousins and family.

I only had one grandmother till i turned 17, she stopped sending presents as soon as we moved to Australia so my last one was for my 10th birthday because she simply couldn't afford it.

My mum made it clear to me that my Grandmother couldnt afford posting parcels all the way to Australia, and my mother always made up for the presents by buying me extra gifts. But it broke my heart when I saw her for the last time in Scotland and to hear from my cousins that theyyyy got presents each christmas and birthdays. It just made me feel like I wasnt part of the family. Hence why I have no contact to them these days, they have no interest in me what so ever

Now, i remember my mum buying me some ugly clothes for xmas i think that was the worst

The worst gift I received was from my brother one year. He gave 10 regular bags of M&Ms, a tooth brush and tube of toothpaste.. I loved M&Ms but not for Christmas!

The funniest gift one year was a gag gift my mom got for the same brother. It was a bright, yellow, rubber jumpsuit that she got a the second hand store she worked at. It was huge!!!

And at another Christmas, all my dad would say when asked what he wanted for Christmas is a box of Kotex. So my mom and I went out and bought the biggest box of Kotex we could find. I think it held about 50 of the suckers! We wrapped it up all pretty like and the look on his face when he opened it was priceless!!!! Well, he did ASK for it!!

that is too funny
Colin gave me the bra in front of all my famliy as well- little nieces and nephews included
They all giggled hysterically when they saw it

the worst so far was a box of gag-inducing old-lady perfume (name omitted to protect anyone who may like said perfume--just not my taste)...enough for a whole gaggle of grannys...and I just recieved some awful bookends (with cats on them, but the cats look like pigs
) as an anniversary present.

Everyone in my family have now learnt to ACT when it comes to my nan's presents. Including my 5year old cousin.

I forgot to mention one of the gifts she got me when I was pregnant. Some knitted socks with very large knitted animal faces on them. One pair was brown wool, with a large monkey head stuck on the front, and the others were grey with a big pink pig head stuck on the front. She said to me.... You'll get cold whe you are in hospital, so these are for then. I was just thinking 'Can't I just wear normal socks?'

I had to wear them on Christmas day too.

I've never gotten what I perceive to be a "bad" gift before. I feel that it's the thought behind the gift that counts, not the gift itself. If it's something I wouldn't normally buy for myself or have a use for, I'll keep it for a period of time and make sure it's out on display a few times when the gift giver comes over, then it goes into a box for storage and eventually to a goodwill charity.

I have received what I consider to be "cheap" and/or substandard gifts.

One year my brother and his wife gave me a an aluminum "egg poacher" and a pair of socks.

Another year they got me what I thought was a great gift: a fuzzy terry bathrobe. That is until I washed it and saw that about 1/2 (no exageration) of the terry loops came out leaving huge bald patches.

About 6 years ago they gave me 6 Mary Kay sample size things which I ended up passing along to the girls at work.

A nice but wasteful gift that they gave me one year about 5 years ago was a $25.00 gift certificate to a place called Giselles. It's a spa-like place that offers facials and manicures etc. I've never been into stuff like that and am careful about what I put on my face because of allergies and hyper sensitive skin. I tried to get a refund on the gift certificate so that I could put the money towards a nursing uniform for work. They had a no refund and not transferable policy, and the certficate had an "expiry" date of 6 months. So I let it expire.

Two words: Portable Urinal. Who was it from? My Dad. Oh, and the people forgot the girl part, so only my husband would be able to use it.

When I think of bad gifts I think of my MIL.

DH and I were married 3 weeks before Christmas. Our first Christmas together, and keep in mind that I was an 18 y/o newlywed, she gave me a floor length flannel nightgown.
She also gave me a jewelry box; I later discovered it had belonged to my BIL's exwife, and she'd left it behind when she moved out. Nothing like re-gifting, huh?

years ago,had been expecting a ren and stimpy game for the megadrive [genesis] from mum,so come christmas day, found out she had indeed bought a ren and stimpy game, but it was for the game gear, not megadrive,it would have helped if had had a game gear-megadrive doesn't sound anything like it.

I've had some pretty bad gifts over the years, but the worst one of all for me was from an ex-boyfriend in college who gave me a pair of fur-lined gloves.

It may not sound so bad, but keep in mind that I've been an avid animal lover my whole life. Anybody who's known me for about 15 minutes knows that, and knows that I hate fur (unless it's still breathing
). So when a guy I'd been dating for several months gave me a gift of fur, it was obvious that he hadn't been paying any attention and didn't know me at all.

I gave him back the gloves and broke up with him on the spot. (Yep...right on Christmas Eve.)

I don't know about bad gifts, but one Christmas when I was little, probably 5 or so, my Grandma gave me a gift and when I unwrapped it, it appeared that it was a phone, at least that's what the pics on the box were of. Well, being 5 I was very excited that I was getting a real phone of my very own
then I opened the box and it was a HOMEMADE cabbage patch doll
not happy anymore

My mother is the queen of habitually buying me clothes that are either so big they look like a circus tent on me or are so small I can't even get them buttoned, zipped, or around my chest area. I don't get it.
I mean every store offers gift cards now so why can't she just give me a couple of those bad boys and let me do the shopping for myself if she obviously can't seem to even ballpark my size.
