I feel horrible lately. When we first moved out here there were a ton of jobs that B was applying for.

In the 2 1/2 months we've lived here, he has not had one call for an interview. Now with the end of the year approaching, less and less jobs are being posted. We're now arguing more because his ego is super sensitive right now, so if I even sneeze in his direction that's enough to start an argument.

We both didn't think that he was going to be this long without a job...especially not even a phone call.

Can I get some job-related vibes for him??? He's just getting upset especially since we're going back to MI for Christmas and he's not happy going back without a job...especially with some members of my family (they assume and judge first
and stick to their assumption without even hearing the story)

Thanks...

Aw, tell him to hang in there. Do you think a call back to wherever he applied at would help? You never know, maybe someone overlooked his application.

I could suggest that to him. Hopefully that's the case! I keep forgetting that there are tons more people on the East Coast than just in the Detroit area.

My Dad tells me that 'if you don't check up on the app. you don't want the job.' But that's him.

Also check out headhunters. It may be a pain but you could see what they offer and then apply to the company directly.

This has been a rough move for the two of you. Sending him lots of vibes. Have him follow up with the previous points of contacts (worst they can say is no - not great for a fragile ego, but better than firing squads). Are there any recruiters that can help with his area?

The only ones I know of are IT recruiters. Unfortunately he's not IT and they don't know many people in his area.

I know how hard it is right now. It took me a good while to find a job

Have you checked craigslist in your area? That's where I found my job.

Yup, Monster, careerbuilder, Craiglist...and he's applying all over the state (or close to it).

He's definitely not looking for a retail job now either. When I applied to a couple, I didn't get a phone call back from some and the one I did interview on, sent a letter stating that they decided not to hire me

I've been trying to find out if there was anything at my place of work (we're large enough that if he worked in a different department it'd be OK). But I haven't made enough friends yet...especially on the side of the building that he would probably be in.

Well...the last job he had he was a supervisor for volunteers. He really liked that job as part of the time he was out of the office raising support and working with the local schools to broaden the program.

In short, something supervisor or management in the social work or HR field. Possibly recruiting too...to be honest, I don't even know what he wants to do.

Oh I understand completley! I've had one interview since I got laid off in the end of June. I've applied for several positions every week. I'm really tired of the questions and what not too.

Hang in there. It's a tough time of year and the job market can be competitive any time. I just keep telling myself that the right one will come.

I'm sorry that he hasn't been able to find work. I don't recall the situation of you having moved to another state. Did he have promised job leads when you guys moved?

If he can't find work in his field, can't he look for something in another field? Anything to get him out and productive. It will do his self esteem a world of good.

Oh sorry! Yes, I actually had gotten a job offer, moved out here and in short things fell through. Luckily the contracting agency liked me and felt horrible about what happen and they worked their tails off finding me a new position.

Last I heard he's thinking about going back to school. The only thing holding him back is that he's waiting for his old loans from his bachelor's to consolidate before he borrows more money. He has approached his old job for recommendations for towards a Master's program, however they aren't returning his calls or emails.
So...he's thinking about going back and getting a second Bachelor's in HR.

I told him to contact the university by here anyway about the Masters. If they really like him, they'll wave the recommendation requirement.

He's tried that before (2 years ago when he was unemployed). In short, he was over qualified for any of the positions. Most of the hiring people flat out said "You'll be bored here in a month"

When I was without a job here, I applied to a few retail places and if I did get interviewed, it was before they saw my resume...I was sad to see that I could never fall back on retail!!!

Even managerial positions?
Wow.

I got hired floor with two bachelor's degrees and working on a Master's... I suppose it all boils down to how desperate they are.

It could be. I wonder too if it had to do with the fact that neither of had any retail in the last 5 years too...I even left off the part about almost having a masters.

Did he ever consider temping?

I've been offered mucho permanent jobs thru temp job placement.
It's a good way to see how an employer works from the inside too.

Best wishes in his search. I know how stressful this can be.
