Hello all. This is my first post in a long time and I hope you will forgive me.
My oldest (11 yrs) and youngest (9-10 wks) kitties both have upper respiratory infections due to an unknown source. The elder, Meeker, started coughing and having runny eyes so I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with a mild URI and given meds. Then my kitten started doing the same thing and when we took him in they said his was really severe! He was given the same meds, Terramycin for the eyes and oral Clavamox and seems to be doing much better. I was just wondering if anybody knows what the chances are of it being feline herpes or the other infectious disease (i'm sorry I don't remember what it's called)? The kitten, Tempyst, was found at a Tesoro station during a big storm we had several weeks back and was taken to my work by a kind-hearted lady and I took him in after a clean bill of health. Is it possible he got a cold during the storm and it just turned into an URI later?

Please keep my kitties in your thoughts and prayers as they fight off this nasty illness.

We just went through 3 of the 4 getting a URI (each). All ranged from a couple of days of sneezing and that's it all the way to 1 week in the Animal Hospital because she couldn't eat.

The thing to keep in mind (and I had to during the time Beauty was in the A.H.) that everyone's immune system is different...this includes cats. Luna didn't need meds at all. She was fine after a couple of days. Whitey sneezed to his little hearts content and basically was the source of getting everyone else infected.
Patches sneezed and drool, had her Clavamox and was better in a week.

Like I said though, Beauty was by far the worse. She had the eye goobers and was on a combination of antibiotics for 2 weeks. She has been med free for almost a week and has been doing a lot better.

Hope your kitties feel better soon! Its terrible to see them sick!

I hope your kitties are feeling better soon. I haven't seen cats with these diseases so can't comment on them.

I've got an appointment with their vet on tuesday, so we'll see how that goes. Meeker has been doing pretty good, although she coughs a lot, but the vet said that's good, it means they're getting the stuff out of their lungs. Also, at Meeker's initial appointment the vet was surprised that she was so old! She said she looks really good for 11, even though I don't think she's old at all, just middle aged. Tempyst has become very active again and can't wait to get out of the bedroom (we were told to isolate them) and play with his big sister again.

Thank you!

The one thing I would watch, as they are living together, is when their meds end. I would try to end the Clavamox within a few days of each other....otherwise one could still be contagious & pass it back to the kitty not on meds....
