I know this is terrible, but given Jordan's seious health issues I've begun to think about what cat I will take from the shelter if something happens to him. I feel bad for thinking about this, but sometimes it helps me get through the bad days. Anyway, I am posting in this forum becuase the cat I'm intrested in is a previously feral cat. I have worked with him & many other ferals at the shelter, but never had one in my home. He's been at the shelter 2 years now & everyone just loves him. His name is Baron, he was left at the door in a live trap one Sunday morning. He was afraid but not aggresive that first day. I was able to handle him on my own that morning. We estimated that he was about 2 at the time & of coarse not neutered. After being there about a week he became agressive. He was so agressive that when we sent him to be neutered he bit a vet tech and had to stay at the vets office for 10 days. I don't remember how long it took, but he did come around with the use of a hand on a stick. He now loves to be petted & talks to us when we call his name. He is still fearful of things, but tends to run away. He will only allow people to pick him up & carry him on your hip. He will not sit on your lap & if you try to pick him up above your hip he struggles to get away. The only form of agression I've seen lately is he slapped my hand when he thought I was going to pick him up & put him back in his cage. He didn't use his claws so I don't even really consider that agression, he just wasn't ready to go back yet.
Basicly, I'm curious to know how people with experience would handle taking him home. He has not been to the vet since his neuter. He has had his distemper shot repeated. I would want to take him to the vet, but I'm wondering if it would be best to take him there before bringing him home, or let him adjust to his new home first? He loves other cats so I don't worry about him enjoying the company of other kitties, but he still needs to be separate for a week. Weather it's my home or someone elses, I'm also looking for any tips to make his adjustment the least traumatic.

I should add that like all cats at our shelter he's been tested for FIV & Feline Lukemia and is negative for both.
