I knew I should have moved when the apartment complex I live in was sold earlier this year. Yesterday they left a note on the door that they'll spend the next 4 weeks conducting lead paint tests in each apartment. I need to know roughly what days they'll be in so I can get the cats and my electonics equipment out of the way, not to mention clean up the place. They can't even give me a rough estimate of when they plan to do my floor. They've pulled stuff like this in the past 6 months, giving vauge estimates (for restricting access to the garage for repairs, needing access to the balconies to install Verizon FIOS) and never telling anyone when they're done. I don't feel like shlepping the cats to my parents house every morning for a month if it's unneccesary and having a lump in my throat worrying that my someone will see the Tivo and HD set and try to swipe them. I called the office this morning just to get a rough estimate and now I fear that it's put me on a black list for asking. Plus I'm exhausted from work and really don't need this now.

Check with whatever authority handles leasing in your state... I believe there are regulations that require them to give you better notice than that. Good luck!

They gave notice on Thursday to start the following Monday so legally they're in the clear. I'm more ticked off about the vagueness, and the lack of notification that they're done. Also I would have thought they would have checked for lead paint when they did the building inspection last winter. This makes no sense - you would have thought either a previous inspection would suffice or it would have been done a long time ago. Lead paint isn't a new problem.
