Many, many, many years ago, when I was 10 years old, we spent our summer vacation in the Ozarks, at a theme park called "Dogpatch, USA". The park was based on Al Capps comic strip "Lil' Abner"

Al Capps world of Lil' Abner

After Al Capp retired and Lil' Abner faded into the past, the park faded too, and finally closed in the 1990's. It was totally abandoned, and spent years falling apart.

I took a nice, long ride today, and ran up on something interesting. The old park is being cleaned up, new roofs put on buildings, some buildings torn down. The old trout pond has been cleaned out and Marble falls is running again. But, nobody seems to know what is going on. There is this very Willie Wonka air about the place, things happening but no one knows what. I'm interested to see what happens.

Much, much cleaner than it was 4 years ago..

Is there a big hole in the rock face on the right side, just below the tree line?
Yes there is, it's a type of honeycomb cave. There are little caves like that all over the Alleghenies and the Appalachians. There are quite a few of them very near my house. Sometimes they are only a meter or two deep, sometimes they will travel to intersect with larger caverns.

I wasn't aware of this. "Dogpatch, USA" is something that I haven't heard uttered in a very long time. But long live Silver Dollar City.
