He's about 4 months old, and the shelter that I adopted him from gave me papers for his neutering. Basically it's free for me.

Anyways, the papers say in Feb, but the place said I could do it earlier then that. When can I? I ask this because I'll be in the desert come January and wont be back till summer. I'd have my parents do it, but they live 170 miles away from me and I'm sure they dont want to drive all the way back out here with him just to get him fixed.

You can have it done now, if you can find a vet that will do early neutering. A lot of vets, especially where I live, insist on waiting until at least 5-6 months.

Most of the newer, more modern vets will neuter at 2 lbs so you just need to find one of those vets.

Depends on the vet. My vet says 5 months as a general rule for males, but my Jordan was about 4 months. I think they just wanted to make sure everything had droped into place to make it quicker & easier on the kitty. For females my vet wouldn't do it until Maggie was 6 months old. I would say at 4 months your baby is ready. Frankly I'd rather neuter at 4 months than wait until after they've gone through puberty and started some of the not so pleasant behaviors that come along with being a tom cat.

You can have him done now - don't wait. The earlier the better. While some shelters/vets will do them at 2 months old, I think between 3-4 months is ideal.

I used to not want my pedigrees done till 8 months old, but can see why the push for earlier spaying/neutering is done. Kittens as young as 4-5 months old can breed and get pregnant.

So go ahead and get him neutered as soon as you can
