Honestly
big thanks
to everyone who offered advice!!! I didn't mean to sound so snappy before, maybe this whole situation is stressing me out...I really love these little guys and want to make sure they have the absolute best in life!!!

I've already talked to one woman who just lost one of her cats (14 years old
) and her son is devestated, we talked quite a bit, but to be extra safe I told her I'd just like her to talk to my husband, as this is a joint decision. She's also fostered cats for her friend when they were away this summer. Sooo, a little more screening and hopefully this will work out.

I told her a bit about the cat's personalities and we decided on the one that would best fit her situation.

I told Patrick how nervous I am, as trust me, I take every warning on this board to heart and I'm naturally over-protective and high-strung about these kind of things. I wish we could have them spayed prior to finding them forever homes, but it really isn't possible around here.

As far as I can tell, I'm screening through the bad and majorly inquiring into the good.

I just can't wait until these kitties find the loving homes that they can grow up happy and loved in getting all the attention they deserve!!!

A big thank you to everyone, as alwayssss for being such a big help!!!!

Aww.. good luck finding homes for those precious babies! My only concern would be speutering the kittens. Sure, potential "parents" may say they will speuter the kitty but I'd want to be certian. In fact, I might consider a short contract that binds the new parents to speuter with in x ammount of time and to notify you when shceduled so you can verify it.

eta: I'd also be sure to ask potential parents about their stance on declawing.

the only thing i have ever personally seen is something like what Jack experienced, the 'shipper' scam, which is usually so obviously a scam that you'd have to be willfully ignorant to fall for it (have you ever gotten the "I AM INTERESTED IN YOUR ANIMAL PLEASE TELL ME FINAL PRICE" emails? sheesh!)

obviously, if you ask for an adoption fee, most unscrupulous people won't bother. and frankly, once you find the right person you are 100% on, just waive the fee.

does anybody have links to any actual, hard news reports about people scouring CL for pets to sell to labs or dogfighters? again, i don't doubt this goes on, but i am willing to bet it is very rare.

I am glad you warned about the video. I couldn't pass the second link though.
It shocks me how bad people can be.
I hope all those kitties used for that sick purpose rest in kitty heaven.

I recently had a young and very beautiful cat stolen, but I am still reluctant to believe the same could have happened to her.

CalicoBlue, thanks for that. i have never been able to find any hard evidence like that of the John Lawler case. the other articles I'm familiar with (dogfighting bait), but these stories never concretely prove the cats are coming from dubious adoptions.

John Lawler's case definitively proves that asking for an adoption fee is your first best line of defense. of course this guy sounded pretty up-front about what he was up to, even saying he wouldn't pay for a pet that would end up dead anyway (!) yikes. people never fail to disappoint me.

I know what you mean about people never failing to disappoint you, Jimmy Legs. There seems to be something about cats and kittens that make them more risk of being targets from some really messed up people. I got my one of my kitties from Craig's List ....she was "free" and I do believe more people are good and have good intentions than not but for that handful that might have cruel motives for taking a free kitten..just need to spread the word to be really careful about screening as best as they can.

The thing that still upsets me the most is seeing the box of kitten in front of a grocery store and people just giving them anyone willing to take them...*sniff*. But that's a whole 'nother subject....

I had to shut it off while watching it so I totally understand...ugh! I'm so sorry to hear about your kitten. There is more good hearted people in the world than not so you hang to that thought. But I know the not knowing is really painful...

Sorry! I post on craigslist ALL THE TIME and there really are a lot of wackos who reply. You HAVE to be careful, I will tell you that!!
But the way you said you wanted to get them out quick so you are just going to give them away for free really concerned me. That is a great way to attract the wackos
Good luck!

I have used craig's list and so have some of my friends.

I want to caution you to be careful for yourself. Don't meet anybody by yourself, don't let them come over if you're alone.

Don't just look after your kittens, but yourself too ok?

remember, have a friend with you, meet in a public place. don't let them come to your home, you don't want some psycho knowing where you live.

just some stuff to be aware of.

Oh my gosh!! I can't believe people do this......I really can't!!

It makes me so upset and angry!!

Now I know why I was SO SCREENED when I adopted, and I even over paid for my two!! (overpaid = overdonation)
wow........I pray for each tiny soul......

I whole-heartedly agree with the above. Last week a young woman in my area was murdered when she went to meet someone after responding to their Craigslist ad for a nanny position. Be careful!!!!

Thanks so much to all of you wonderful people for your advice!!!!

I had wonderful luck, tons of responses but weeded out to find the best two families to each take one of the little girls.

They are keeping in touch and both kittens are doing great!!!

I miss them a lot, especially my little pumpkin who is my avatar, but I know they'll get all the love and attention they deserve!!!

Once again, thanks to everyone on this site. I don't know what I'd do without you all sometimes!!!
