A little over a year and a half ago i worked at a local daycare center near my house with my sister and we tought the two year olds together. One of the sweet little angels we tought was named Liv- Liv has severe allergies to peanut butter.
Now the preschool i worked for was peanut butter free- soo much so that we the teachers and the parents and other kids as well were not allowed to ever bring any into the facility- and were also asked not to eat or touch peanut butter before entering the building in the mornings (for some kids -all it takes is the scent to make them deathly ill).
Even though i left the daycare center as a teacher (i found a job i liked better- but still miss the kiddos!) my sister Kimmy stayed on as one of the teachers and now teaches the 3 yr olds (so Liv moved up with her). Well today i got a phone call i never wanted to hear. Little Liv is in the hospital (now in stable condition- thankfully!)
Earlier this morning, one of the other teachers brought in some bird seed for the kids to use in making a little arts & crafts project. They did not realize at the time that the bird seed had peanut butter in it. It was an honest accident. Well - when they passed out the birdseed, little Liv had some in her hand. My sister said she started coughing (like she was trying to clear her throat - she never does that- so they knew something was wrong) That's when it dawned on them- the birdseed! Sure enough -it had peanut butter in it
The called her mom and her mom (she didn't know Liv would go into shock from just touching it- she thought she had to eat it) her mom said to give her a benadryl and call back in a few moments if she wasn't better. As soon as they hung up the phone -she started going into Anaphylaxis
shock. They immediately got her epi pen out and called 911 and her momma again. When one of the other teachers went to give her the epi pen- she accidently hit it against the table and the pen released the solution- so they couldn't use it. Fortunately though for Liv, the fire dpt is only a few seconds down the road- so they arrived VERY fast and were able to give her a shot of epinephrine then get her to the hospital. My sister rode with her on the way up there in the ambulance and her momma met them there.
Last update is that little Liv is going to be fine- she is in stable condition and expected to be released soon. The poor little dear is only 3 though so it's been quite a bad day for her. My heart goes out to her- she's such a prescious little girl. I'm just soo glad that the teachers realized what was happening and acted as soon as they realized there may be peanut butter in the birdseed. I just wish it didn't happen in the first place- but it was an honest accident. Could ya'll please spare a few vibes for little Liv tonight? She's had quite the scarry day (and her mom as well!)
