Blue Buffalo is recalling one production run of their Spa Select Kitten dry food due to the RPC. The production code on the recalled product is:

"Best Used By Mar. 07 08 B."

http://www.bluebuff.com/

I saw this on Howl 911 which I am now checking religiously.

FDA asks if pet food tainted on purpose 4-20

"In California, state agriculture officials placed a hog farm under quarantine after melamine was found in pig urine there."

I fear that the pet food recall was just the beginning....
the canary in the coal mine, early warning, for human food.

Well, I definitely think there is something up... it doesn't make sense that three grain types, different batches, are all suddenly coming up with melamine in it.. it would have made sense/been logical if it was just one, but honestly.. I think it's starting to go beyond the scope happenstance?? Don't know..

Why were they feeding recalled cat and dog food to pigs? Shouldn't recalled food be destroyed on the spot?

Is brewer's rice and rice gluten the same thing? It seems like the terrible Chinese company makes gluten and other processed stuff but not whole grains.

Then again, I don't believe any of the cat foods are safe anymore. Some of the stuff on the supposedly safe list now is on the recall list!

NO
Brewers rice is fragmented rice left over from brewing beer.... Rice gluten is the protoend part of the rice

Ok, once again I am SLOW. lol

I don't think they knowingly fed RECALLED food to the pigs...it was "salvaged" food, but not recalled.

Brewer's rice is basically small fragments of milled rice...a by product of rice milling. Not particularly good stuff even without these problems.

Dear Naturestee and Family:

Many thanks -- I saw this on AOL news' latest updates as well. I've noted the URL and as I've never visited, plan to do so. Btw, your little furfamily is absolutely adorable!!!

Yes, the fact that melamine has been found in three different grain products from China is beyond coincidence. Is adding melamine to feed products a common practice in China? Or, as has been mentioned in other threads, is the melamine in the fertilizer and is that enough to contaminate the grains?

Now I know why it is the first ingredient in Hills s/d. I wish Eric didn't have to eat that stuff.

Have you asked your doctor if there is another special diet than Science Diet that he could be switched to?

The vet clinic I go to only uses Hills and Eukanuba RX foods. I don't know of any vets here that use Royal Canin. I asked the vet about urine acidifiers. He doesn't use them because of the long term side effects. Once the crystals are dissolved, his pH is at an appropriate level and his food is switched to c/d I'll try to determine the minimum amount he needs along with his wet food.

Dear Jean44:

Have you asked him about/do you know about Methigel? My Samuda had crystals and blockages at times, and his doctor put him on Methigel, which helped greatly. It's a gel paste similar to Petromalt, but supplies Methionine, which aids in preventing the formation of crystals in the urine. Since we moved here, however, he has not needed it once, nor has he had any problems. We think it's the water that's made the difference, as our old neighborhood was between a Superfund cleanup site and a sewage treatment plant (yes, really!) and the water there was -- you guessed it! -- well water. He wouldn't drink bottled water, and so I believe that was the problem. Up here, the water is a lot cleaner and purer, hence no problems.

BTW, your cats are gorgeous and Eric is such a cutie! I always say I don't like to "play favorites", but I must admit to a weakness for the little black shorthairs, especially males. My sweet King Sunny-A-Cat, who left me several years back, is the reason.

So is Blue spa select still safe?? I just bought some today and didn't find out until today that the rice protein concentrate is in some of their products! I only bought the dry. I am assuming they are talking about wet food, or is it dry also?
What am I suppose to feed them now?

It was among the recalled foods, I believe. Not sure....you'd have to look through H&N threads....there was a new one about Spa Select.
