so, as some of you may have seen already, our chameleon died this morning...today just happened to be payday. i went to petsmart and petco and bought 125 cans of cat food. am i totally nuts?

No, not at all...life goes on and cat food needs to be bought. If shopping was a diversion for you, and didn't harm your budget nor was the spending done on something harmful, then retail therapy was an excellent choice!
