I just found out Washoe, the first chimpanzee who learned American Sign Language, passed away Oct. 30th. She was 42.

Washoe was a real ground-breaker. Personally, I got interested in linguistics, behaviorism, and animal psychology through reading about her and her amazing work. I thought I'd post this in case any of you knew of her.

For a nice condensed story of her & her family's life, see the history and timeline link at http://www.friendsofwashoe.org/

I remember her
In the past few years the "groundbreakers" have left us, first was Snowflake, the white/albino gorilla; now Washoe. At least Koko is still alive. She's the gorilla who knows sign language.

Yes, I "follow" Koko - she had a pet kitty she called "All Ball"! The love of cats spans species!

BTW, whoever moved this, thank you - I was not sure where to put it, given that Washoe was not a feline...thanks.
