Orange Tabby personality?

We saw an adorable 5-6 month old orange tabby at Petsmart. As soon as we came in to greet him in his pen, he rubbed his cheek on my finger and rolled around and pushed his face in my hand! He was also meowing and scratching the cage, as if saying he wants to go home! He is so sweet, I think I'm in love!

But, not having any experience with orange tabby, I don't know what their general disposition is. I know each cat is an individual, but do they generally have a certain kind of personality? Would an orange tabby be a good fit with my energetic, rambunctious, 1 1/2 year old female, Shelly?

(Mods, sorry if I should have just posted this with my thread a couple of days ago, please merge them if you need to)

Every orange cat I have ever been around has been exceptionally loving ......... I really want my next kitty to be orange.

About a week ago I went to the pet store and there was a litter of orange kittens that were all so adorable, friendly and sweet. I almost came home with them all.

Eeek! A whole orange litter?

I would have scooped them up and brought them home!

I have no experiance with Orange boys, but I do with Orange girls.

My Gracie is the sweetest little thing on earth.
She loves to be held and cuddle, she's just a little lovebug.

I swear I really thought about it hard. I stayed there and played with them forever.

Thank you for the quick answers!

I want to adopt this boy today! I'm pining away for him as we speak! But, I want to make sure he's a good fit for Shelly. Are orange tabbies laid back or energetic? Are they playful? Would Shelly bother them because she's energetic?

Oh I'm so excited! I may have a new kitty today!!!

Again, my experiance is with female Orange babies.
Lizzie our RB Orange girl was always ripping around just a bundle of energy...she's Gracie's Sister.
Gracie on the other hand is a very laid back little girl....that is until Elliott our 17 pound monster boy starts chasing her.
She used to run, now she just stops dead in her tracks , turns around and he runs away...she's all of 5 pounds

What is it about orange cats!? I have never heard of an orange cat being anything but adorable and loving! And because of this, I adopted a 5 month old orange boy that will be coming home on Nov. 17th! I can't wait.

Go....no...RUN and get your orange kitty! They're taking over the world...one household at a time.

In my experience (owned red tabby rexes and red tabby DSH) I LOVEEEE the red-headed boys. I think they have one of the best personalities. There are exceptions, but in general I find that purebred or not, the red guys are nutty, goofy, and very lovable.

They can be either active or laid back. My DSH red boy was pretty laid back, but the red tabby rexes (being rexes) were very active

Having dealt with orange ferals and several kittens, I'd say that no - color has nothing to really do with personality. How well they were socialized as babies does though and as long as the kitten you're thinking of getting seems very social and friendly with other cats, then go for it. I hope your girl agrees with your choice and they get along well.

As for always hearing about how sweet and loving peoples orange kitties are on here... just like with children, is anyone honestly going to say bad things about their own cats?

"DAAAAADDDDYYY CAN WE KEEP HIM?"

When I was about 12 years old I found an orange tabby kitten that I INSISTED that we keep. He is one of the SWEETEST and MOST friendly cats I've ever known. The kind of cat that walks up to a newcomer and stuffs his head in their armpit.

His name is Loki, and boy does it fit him, haha.

There are some who think color has a bearing on personality, though I don't know whether I agree or not. But here's an interesting article:

I'd put both my orange tabbies in the "high-strung" personality type. Both are affectionate, but only toward me.

Well I'll be the first to admit something "bad" about color and my cats

I love calicos and torties (cause you can get lots of different color kittens with RESPONSIBLE breeding). But I hate their personalities! Every one of my torties or calicos had that "tortie" attitude. Even my odd-eye white rex who was a tortie genetically (she carried both red and black genes) was the same tortie attitude.

My orange-kitty friend Skimble was the sort who thought himself to be human. He sat next to you--never on your lap, but next to you and leaning against you--and purred and kneaded with his paws. Yep, sweet--but a bunch of trouble, too, and nimble paws enough to get him into (but not always out of) just about anything! We had to put the kitty food on the highest closet shelf, or that little boy would've been all over it! The only door he couldn't get through was a locked one; we called him Houdini!

(I like the tortie attitude. Heh.

I have 2 orange boys (one DSH and one pedigree) and they are both sweet natured but very dominant cats. I know a lot of people with orange cats who say their cats have dominant personalities too so it may be related to colour.

I have an orange tabby (Moose) who loves everyone. He will jump into a stranger's arms and would probably go home with them! He sleeps with me and is overall very loving, but is also high strung. I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.

For what it's worth, I've had two orange cats of my own, and several friends and relatives have them.

Most of the time, they are laid back and loving. However, they will play with other cats (and even dogs!) very well. One of the boys used to play with Princess; the two would bat at each other under doors. My friends cats have all had that same personality. (Only one was an orange girl, and 6 orange boys). The only ones that weren't as playful were over 10 years old. Several liked to play with dogs, too. My grandmother had an orange boy that was best friends with her Pit Bull mix; the two would tumble across the yard together.

The only orange I've know to not have this personality is our cat Puppy. However, he's "special". He's on meds for anxiety, which is only a symptom of his real issues. It took him 6 months to adjust to the new kitty; but now they play really well together. She usually starts the play fights, but he'll tumble around and play chase if she starts it. He's a sweetheart, but he has issues with laps and any form of cuddling. It took him a year to even deal with being on the bed at the same time as us. It's been two years now, and he's just started purring and not struggling when we pick him up. As stated though, he's a special kitty and has some mental problems.

Given that your boy is a kitten, he'll probably be quite happy to play with another cat.
He'll have the energy, and after a while he'll be able to hold his own with your other kitty. None of the orange cats I know have felt the need to be the top cat though, so he's probably a good match for your girl.

I have had 3 orange tabbies, and 2 of them were the sweetest, most laid bad, adorable babies ever. My current little red boy, Scooter, is kind of a little stinker, but is still very sweet. I think being pushed around by a houseful of female cats makes him a little nervous.

If I could, I would have a dozen red tabby boys. I have such a soft spot for them. I highly recommend you get this little sweetheart before someone else falls in love.
