Pumpkin tax!!

The state of Iowa has decided to tax pumpkins because they are used primarily for decoration and not food. Who else thinks that's a load of doo doo.
Sounds just like those rednecks in Iowa.

(I was born and raised in Iowa)

Seriously, food is food, it is none of the State of Iowa's business WHAT they use the pumpkins for. Doesn't the state government has enough to do?

A pumpkin is a squash and it's food. People could just as easily have decided to carve apples, would that make those any less food than they are? That's rediculous and people should be complaining loudly about that!
Don't most people who carve pumpkins actually use the "flesh" for pies, muffins, bread, etc.? I've never heard of people just throwing it away.

We agree! Taxing pumpkins is taking it too far. Food is food no matter what people do with it. We could decorate our house with carrots, does that mean they should be taxed?

As a baker I'm quite offended and am calling off my vacation plans for the Iowa State Fair.

I bake the seeds and eat them
I have to admit I don't use the large pumpkins for pies. I prefer the small pie pumpkins as they are called here.

I live in a state where all FOOD IS TAXED .... lol I cant see how they would prove what pumpkin was not for seed s or pie...
WOW Sharky, that's a bummer. I didn't think any states did that anymore.

Our normal VAT is now 19%; food is taxed at 7%. The government wanted 19% VAT on pet food, but caved in after massive protests.

I swear governments want to tax people to death.

Nah, they want to tax you just shy of death so you have to keep paying.
Just checked my state we have a 4% food tax. Unless the website I read is wrong.
Ours is complicated, we do not pay GST on basic groceries, agricultural and fishery products (in stores) but we do on luxury foods. We then have PST which most foods are exempt from. However, if a food is classed as prepared, there is tax on it, so you have to wait until you get to the till to work out what you are paying.

Yeah I live in Iowa and saw it in our newspaper this morning. Just 1 more thing to have to pay taxes for. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. They know we will still buy them.

So will the rich though with or without the tax

Despite how many pumpkins are sold on halloween, I can't see them making that much money from them, tax is a fairly small percentage, and even less so in actual $ amounts when it comes to the price of a pumpkin. I hope the politicians realise how many votes they will lose over such a small financial gain (at least in proportion to their annual budget)

I don't understand the above post. It is the govt that would get the tax.

Anyway, I heard this tax has been repealed due to Iowa becoming a laughing stock over it.

So, now the poor can get richer.

So canned pumpkin is taxed too? Either way, sounds pretty stupid to me.

Yeah, but they can afford it, doesn't matter to them. It is those (with children who want to carve a Halloween pumpkin and eat the baked seeds inside) that can barely afford a pumpkin to begin with who really pay. Like most things...

My thoughts exactly
That spells out for me that Iowa government funds are a little pinched. Perhaps they didn't the federal funding they expected, so they're coming up with a silly tax to make up for it. Otherwise they would have to start to cut programs that the state provides.
This seems a bit silly to me. I mean, I can see about charging a bit extra for them around Halloween because really, it's such a waste if they're not being used for food and in this day and age, we should be being much more careful about waste in general - especially when there's so many people in the world starving - but a general tax for all the time based on one event of the year? That's a bit much.
Can anyone HEAR me???????????????

They repealed the tax, quit beating a dead horse.

They COULD start cutting the massive aid they give to people that have fried their brains with drugs for starters. That would save a mint.

Just because they can afford it doesn't mean they get richer, they get richer by tax breaks not unavoidable taxes such as sales tax.
Wow... I didn't know that food WASN'T taxed anywhere. That must be nice.

Yeah. Things such as dinner rolls, if you buy 6 it's tax free, but if you buy 1 or 2 it's considered "convenience food" and you are charged GST tax on it.
That is why I never know how much I am paying

Oh my gosh, that is as bad as the pumpkin tax IMO. How stupid.

I think it is hilarious that the State of Iowa became SUCH a laughing stock over their pumpkin tax that they repealed it. I wonder if they will give any tax refunds for taxes collected on it. Ten bucks says "NO"
