Hi,

Just a bit concerned about my little Purdita's growth. She's 7.5 months now, and weighs just 6lb's. Is this right? My other cat Lucy (RIP) was massive at 7 months.

Ive been to see my vet about her, and she's not concerned, so why should I be? She says she wont spay her, as shes not the right size yet (!)

She's also not come into season yet either. Is there something wrong?

Thanks

She may be like some humans, who are small all their lives or maybe who had a later adolescent growth spurt. I would say if the vet isn't concerned, you should be reassured. I don't know why he'd hold off on the spay, since some shelters spay at a few months, but maybe he's concerned that with her small size, the anesthetic might be harder for her to tolerate. You may want to ask him exactly why he made this recommendation.

PS-Purdita is beautiful!

Your kitten is beautiful!!!!!

My cat, a Russian Blue is almost 7 months old and only weighs 4 pounds. But Russian Blue's are known to be a smaller breed.

Weight really depends on the breed and you cannot determine it just by the age of the cat. I had Nakita spayed at 6 months of age and the vet was not worried about the weight. He just adjusted the meds according to her weight.

Purrdita is beautiful! Like some cats, she might just be small boned and a small breed cross as well. If you would like to bulk her up you can go to a health food store and buy some nutri-yeast. Sprinkle just a tiny amount of this powder over her wet food- go slow at first, the smell sometimes puts cats off if you give to much, then slowly increase it so she is getting about 1/4 a tsp three times a day in her wet food.

I have a 9 month old female gray tabby who only weighs 4 1/2 pounds! She is smaller than my 6 1/2 month old Siamese male, he weighs 6 pounds. I think that maybe she just has'nt went through her growth spurt yet! My other kitten, Xena (Hercules' sister) only weighs 5 pounds! She is also 6 1/2 months old. When a cat goes into heat their bone growth shuts off. That may be the reason why my females are all small! Peppurr is almost 2 an weighs 13 pounds. Vader is almost 2 and weighs 11 pounds! My boys are all HUGE!
