Hi, everyone! I stumbled onto this site a few weeks back and I have really enjoyed reading the posts here. I am not a cat owner, but I love the little critters. My boyfriend had a black cat - Cato lived to be almost 21 years old before he succumbed to kidney disease. I loved him and doted on him and cried my eyes out when he passed.

In the last three years or so, I have been dedicated to volunteering with a local animal rescue- focused on cat care. These days, I look after the cats we have in our rescue's PetSmart store front - I am the Friday night pooper-scooper!!!

Actually much more than that - I play with them, try to socialize the shy ones, comfort the scared ones, give them a wet food treat when I am done cleaning. The ones who have been there even for a couple of weeks know- they charge the cage door or go thundering through the cage portholes to the spot where I feed them. So cute! We give each adult cat two cages, so they are not squeezed into those pitiful little cubes.

I have found this site to be extremely helpful in my attempt to better understand the behavior of my temporary fur-babies and thus, take better care of them.

If I remember - and these days it's a challenge for my middle-age brain - I will take some pics of our most current "guests" and post them here.

Regards,
AddieBee

Renting rules - sort of

I am relatively new to cat-world. Wasn't that fond - bitten on the face when I was a girl. But then I started dating BF almost 4 years ago and met --CATO THE BLACK CAT!!!!-- and fell in love - not with BF, with the kitty!!

I had to move in with my elderly mother to look after her - she does not like or want any animals in the house and SHE MEANS IT!!

So, I volunteer.

My BF is still grieving. We put Cato down last February... so he is not ready for another pet. But he comes and helps me with the cats -mostly he plays with them while I clean.

When the time is right for both of us, there will be some very lucky kitties out there!!! In the meantime, I do what I can. I helped save a week-old kitten recently - we found her a lady who does rescue who had a nursing Momma cat who accepted her right away. And I am keeping tabs on her. Teeny little thing - tuxi cat with a white bib and teensy white toes. Well, not so teensy anymore... she is doing great.

So, that's my story.

Thanks for sharing your story with us AddieBee...
When the time is right, your furry sweetie pies will find you.

It's wonderful, that for now, you are helping needy kitties through your volunteer work.

You are welcome to post a tribute memorial to you BF's kitty in our Crossing the Bridge forum.
RIP Cato.

Thank you for sharing; so sorry about Cato.

The week-old rescue is amazing - such a tiny baby! I bet she was Little Miss Ecstatic when you found her a foster mommy to nurse from!

That whole tiny kitten story is a miracle - a very, very lucky kitten indeed. I was at the PetsMart ... getting ready to leave - I was at the front door in fact, when a young couple came in. The woman had the hem of her sweatshirt turned up, which made me curious. I said, what do you have in there and she showed me a tiny black and white kitten. She had found it in the middle of the road while out jogging.

It's eyes were not open - couldn't have been much more than a week old. I got a bottle, nipples and some KMR and began making some phone calls right there in the store - no luck to find a nursing mom, which was best for a baby that small. But as it turned out - one of the groomers knew this family - the girl worked at the store but was not in at the time - who take in rescues and are certified by the DNR here in Michigan to do wildlife rehab, etc. That family had a nursing mom. She took the kitten to that family, along with the KMR etc. They gave the little baby a bottle, to make sure that she had something to eat ... and then introduced her to the momma cat. Momma, who had babies about a week older than this, sniffed her, snagged her by the scruff - right out of the girl's hand and plopped the little foundling right into the nest and let her nurse!

The baby was healthy and vigorous - no visible sign of injury, didn't seem to have fleas - nice strong cry, pink gums and tongue. She even growled at me while I was examing her!

At last check - I keep saying she, but I am not sure - was doing well. Eyes opened, she's trying to go after her adopted siblings, squeaks to be picked up and cuddled.

The only thing we could think of what happened is that its biological mom was moving the baby and something spooked her and she dropped the kitten in the middle of a street and ran off. I hate to think the mom was killed or something like that.

And the young lady whose family does this work seems to have fallen in love with this baby. So at the very least, she (or he) will have a good home.

I need to get an update and I really want to see the little kitten.

As I said, this is one very lucky kitten. They should name her Lucky or Milagro (Spanish for Miracle). One friend suggested Clover - as in the 4-leaf variety. I think that's really cute.
