My 2 foster babies are now 12 weeks old and once in awhile I still catch them nursing from momma kitty. She doesn't seem to mind. Momma really needs to gain some weight (she was 5 lbs. when she came to me 10 weeks ago, has gained about a 1 lb so far). Should I discourage nursing at this point or let momma do her thing? They were supposed to go in for spay/neuter surgery this week, but their URI came back and we're waiting for that to clear up first. So hopefully after the surgery, they'll quickly get adopted and this won't be an issue.

I dont know too much, but my Tigger who is almost 6 months was trying to nurse of big sister georgi up until 5 months I think - he didnt get anything but he still lay there sucking on hair or something for ages probably just for comfort. He actually did it a little bit a couple of weeks ago.. maybe he is just weird but yeah they may go for a long time.

Momma cat will definitely let the babies know when time is up for nursing. It will not hurt anything for them to nurse at this age at all.

If mom needs to regain the weight, then you should separate the kittens from mom and make her stop nursing. Some females will let kittens nurse a long time, but I only allow it if mom's in good shape.

My kittens are 5 month old and they are still sucking on and off.
I don't think mama is producing much milk...
I guess it's like sucking on thumb?

You need to make sure the momma gets extra nutrients...expecially her being so small. If the kittens are still nursing off of her, then they are taking some of those away from her...she needs all she can get. As for as them actually nursing...they are old enough not to be needing to nurse any more...
