I recently adopted a 4 month old male kitten. I've noticed that he makes a digging or scraping motion on the floor around his food bowl. Any ideas as to why he does this? Thanks!

Yes, I've got 2 out of 5 cats that do this...sometimes they even drag something over to cover up the food. It's to keep predators from finding their feeding place.

If I leave a napkin on the counter, it usually finds its way into hos food bowl

With Carmel it's the ultimate insult to any canned food to taste a little and then go through the motions to bury it. It means she never wants to see that food again and will never eat any more of it no matter how many times I offer it. With the others it usually just means they are full and want to save the rest from someone else eating it.

Thanks for the responses. Oliver usually does it when he is done eating, so I guess that means he likes his food.

I've never seen a cat hide his/her food under a stray napkin--but that is just too darn cute!

Both of my kitties do this, but Hannah is the most persistent. She knocks her bowls around and they end up out in the walkway!
Callie is much more suave about it and would never be unladylike or make any noise when she covers her food!!

Mine all do that - especially Maverick, and especially if it's the "stinky" food.
It's nothing to worry about.

My bannister falling cat does that, she's the only cat I've seen do that. I know dogs bury their food, but with cats, the digging motion seems more like the litter pan thing, so I assumed when she did that she thought of the food the same as what's in the litter pan (not good)

Demetri is the only one of mine who does it, he's always scraped around the plate when he's done but since his brother and sister have come along he now drags whatever he can over the food.

Our 4 month stray kitten Blue does this too. We feed both wet and dry food. Kibble is all over the floor, is eventually eaten at end of day. She's one goofy kitty and we just love her. Glad to hear this behavior is normal.

Haha, Onni does this too! If the food is terrible enough, he keeps burying it several times until I get the point, and throw it in to bin 😄
