Mackinaw Island questions.....

So we may move up our wedding to next July and get married with just our close family in Mackinaw Island. I have heard that it is BEAUTIFUL to get married up there. I was just wondering if anyone lives up there or has gotten married there. Did you have your own minister/priest come or did you use one up there? Would you reccommend a good photographer? Since we won't be paying a lot of money, should we pay for our families hotel rooms? We would also make the week after our honeymoon, so is there any touist attractions up there?

Thanks ahead of time!

Honey, Mackinac Island IS the tourist attraction
there is a ton of stuff to do on the island, like the Fort, horseback riding, tours, history, The Grand Hotel.
In the city there's another fort called Michilimackinaw (sp?) that was pretty neat to look at. You're also a short drive to the U.P. for kayaking, canoing, the locks (Sault st. Marie) etc.

We were thinking about being married up there, but a lot of the venues I looked at wanted $5000 just to rent the site. That's why we chose Traverse City instead.

Anyhoo, here are a couple of sites you can check out:
Mackinac Wedding Guide

This site is mostly for between Petosky and T.C, but may help you. Many of the pastors/photographers/etc on there travel between the locations since it's 1.5 hours between Mackinac and Traverse City.
Traverse City Weddings

Also, PM twstychik as I think she was married there this past summer.

Hope this helps get you started!!! Northen Michigan is truely a wonderful place

How exciting! Mackinac Island was one of the places I considered going last year for my vacation but I chose New England instead. I bet it will be a beautiful place for a wedding. http://www.mackinacisland.org/index.html

We were just going to get married on a beach. It will definately be cheaper and I have already found a few dresses that are beach-appropriate! I can't post them because SOMEBODY is nosy

But what do you think about paying for our families hotels for the weekend?

Yes!! Definitely the beach will cost less. Just to forewarn you though, if its on a public beach, you'll need to send some people down there early to "reserve" the area you want Otherwise you may have a little difficulty with space.

If paying for your families hotels is in the budget, go for it. You may also want to look into vacation rentals. most places try to rent Sunday - Sunday in the summer, but you can find summer rentals for the weekend. Some places may be cheaper: http://www.homeaway.com/

Also if you book your reception at a hotel, often times they'll set aside several rooms (20 to start) for your guests at no extra cost and give them a discount. Our guests are getting a 20% at the hotel we're doing ours at.

There will only be about 12 people or so at most. Are there private beaches?

What you can do (and this was our original plan) is rent a cottage or house up there with your own private beach. Then you don't have to worry reserving early. You can also look into renting out an entire (but small) resort. Our second choice was one up on Suttons Bay. We would have booked it (as they offered a really nice package) but they wanted a 50% deposit for the ENTIRE wedding, which we didn't have at the time.

I didn't get that far as for beaches that you can pay for in Mackinac. If its like Traverse city though, even if there's a hotel right behind the beach, they won't reserve. Ours offered it, but said that its based on first come first serve.

This is another site I came across. again it's more Traverse than Mackinac, but I got some really good people to contact from it that offer wedding options all along upper lake michigan:Events by the Bay

I just found this too. If you're into any historic sites up there, you can rent these out for a cost (some places are lower than others): Michigan Historic Parks

They have a really nice setting at each and

I've only done day trips to Mackinaw Island. If you want beautiful...have your wedding in the middle of June during the lilac festival. The island is loaded with lilac trees and they usually bloom about the second week of June. It is BEYOND beautiful!!!

Oh yea and start calling NOW for locations. I know when we were looking last summer one place gave a tour with one other couple...we were both bidding for the same weekend in July 08.

I do agree with Pookie Poo - the lilac festival is GORGEOUS! smells good too!

This is great idea! That part of Michigan is beautiful any time of year. I don't really have anything to add, other than have a wonderful time!
