I really don't like JFK anymore! I don't understand how it wouldn't just be easier and humane obviously to work with rescue organizations and spay-neuter programs? Living in NY makes me sick.

Looks like I'll be flying LaGuardia from here on in. . .

It was Port Authority's decision, not the airport's.
If you use any airport in NY you'll still be dealing with NY Port Authority.

I honestly don't see why the cats would be such an issue, I think the cat food drawing birds is a bit far fetched and smacks of excuse, not reason.

Port Authority is so going down...

I'm just going to have to learn to love road trips and cruises, no more NY airports until something is done for these poor kitties!

Once again cats have to pay for human errors and heartlessness. Pets getting lost? Travelers not wanting to pay kennel fees? Unbelievable...

here is some info I got from the head cat at the neighborhood cats organization.

there will be a protest ..... here is the info......

Departure Delayed! Protest the Killing of Cats at JFK Airport by Port Authority

What: In Defense of Animals (IDA) / Neighborhood Cats Protest of JFK Airport Feral Cat Extermination

Date: Monday October 29, 2007

Time: 12:00-1:00pm (Rain or shine!)

Location: Port Authority of NY and NJ Headquarters
225 Park Ave South
(between 18th & 19th Streets, just north of Union Square)
Manhattan

It's crucial to keep the heat on starting again on Monday, so we're taking
to the streets! Most importantly, bring yourself, especially at noon. And if
you can, break out those cat ears, claws and tails (good visuals!) and make
your own posters (we'll provide some, too). Time to bare our teeth and
claws and let the Port Authoritiy know they work for US and we won't
tolerate the senseless eradication of cats in our city!!

TNR GROUNDED AT JFK!! Port Authority Seeks Extermination of Feral Cats
at Airport

(New York, NY) According to Port Authority officials, the most pressing
threat to aviation security at JFK Airport is no longer terrorism,
but feral cats! Contracts have been ordered to immediately round up and
exterminate scores of felines residing on the 5000 acres of one of the
nation's busiest airports. Even cats sterilized, vaccinated for rabies and
cared for by volunteers according to the Trap-Neuter- Return (TNR)
method are under attack.

"The Port Authority's claim that feeding these cats is attracting large
numbers of birds who, in turn, could bring down a jet is beyond absurd,"
according to Bryan Kortis, Executive Director of Neighborhood Cats, a l
eading cat advocacy group. "There isn't any food left the birds and,
besides, cats have been at JFK for decades. Now all of a sudden when
concerned groups want to neuter and care for these cats, they're a
security threat. The public needs to let Port Authority know loud and clear
we're not as stupid as they think and won't buy their concocted
justification for needlessly killing these animals."

Feral cats are the descendants of lost or abandoned cats and, at JFK,
originate from cats lost or abandoned by travelers. Attempts to eradicate
them have historically failed. By contrast, TNR has repeatedly been used
to nonlethally lower cat numbers and eliminate sanitary and nuisance
concerns. TNR involves neutering the cats, vaccinating them for rabies,
returning them to their territory, then monitoring and caring for them.
Over time, attrition lowers their populations.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Call, fax and email Port Authority officials and protest the extermination effort.
Urge them to meet with NYC Feral Cat Initiative representatives and come
up with an intelligent plan to TNR and manage the JFK cats. The NYC Feral
Cat Initiative is a program of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals.

That's so sad
I didn't know about this issue. I'm flying into JFK airport next Friday and wonder if I'll see the kitties. I know it will break my heart.

just wanted to let everyone know that this is still being fought.

at the last protest the officials decided they would give a person from
3 cat organizations either 2 or 3 minutes each to speak on behalf of the
cats.

they sent around what was said and even though they had little time,
their speeches were awesome, to the point and really drove home the
importance of changing the way they were presently doing things.

i understand that another protest is due to take place i think this week.
