I think this illustrates well the problem that I have with most organized religions. It is not the hypocrisy (which we all agree is present in most, if not all of humanity) but the fact that they are purely self-justified.
Christians feel they are right about X because the Bible says X. Why is the Bible a source of truth? Well, the Bible is the word of God. How do we know that? Well, it's written in the Bible.
So following that, I and other non-Christians are on the path to destruction, guided by Satan and his evil plans... because the Bible says so. The argument makes sense to Christians, but it means nothing to non-Christians, aside from being seen as a condescending or hostile attitude.
As interested as I am in the discussion, I find it very difficult to find a way to reply to things like that.
I could keep making comments like "well, was Gandhi led by Satan? Is the Dalai Llama on a path to destruction?", which was my first gut reaction... but I think all I will ask of the Christians here is to accept that other people find other sources of truth outside the Bible, and please do not feel sorry for us because of it.
And as with hypocrisy, this is not something that is present only in Christianity. I talked to Christians because this was the subject of the thread, but I think people of all religions (as well as those with no religion) need to be more willing to accept other's beliefs.
