I was suppose to have a 6:00 pm phone interview with another company. It's 6:20pm and no phone call.

I contacted them originally interested in a position they posted. They had other positions as well in the field that I'm going into and were a direct hire. So I sent my resume on to the HR person, along with a few documentations that I did in the last year last Tuesday. Late Friday afternoon I contacted them asking for the status. They called me 9:00 am Monday morning to say that they are VERY VERY interested in my experience and background and wanted to do set up a phone interview with the senior partner, the hiring person.

I just reread my email and was given a # to call, but really, at this point this company is making me feel like I'm begging.
If they're truly that interested in me, then they should have called at 6:00 pm.

There were other things about this company that I didn't trust, personally. It was another small company, the travel was going to be 50%, and I would have had to take a pay cut from my asking price (which I've lowered quite a bit already) which wouldn't really cut the bills. I also could not find a lot of information in regards to the company, just a page or two of propaganda plus their web site. There was just something in my gut that I really wasn't enthused about this job.

B, of course, is pushing for me to find out information and to contact them, etc.
I just don't think this is the job. My gut just isn't saying to pursue it.

I would say listen to your gut. If they aren't with it enough to call someone they're "really interested in" then that's not a great place to work...will they forget to pay you too??

Thanks. I know it sounds petty, but I just don't want to be in a job that I don't like.

Nothing petty about it. It's just awful to be in a job you don't like. Think about how many hours a day you spend at work (for me unfortunately it's much much more than the time I spend at home), if you don't like the job or the work environment it's a quality of life issue.

I've also been in the position of liking my job, but hating the work environment (this is just as bad).

I say if they can't treat you well before they've hired you, think about how they'd treat you once you were there.

That's the way I've always looked at it too. However B disagrees...he thinks it a "test" to see how badly I want the job. Ummmm....IMO if I'm doing all the work to get myself in there, then I'm not too keen on working there. Especially if I have to stroke someone's ego that badly.

If you don't have a good feeling then don't pursue it. I think instinct is a subconscious thinking process and there are clues you are procesing that aren't visible to you about this.

Hey, if they don't call you....what are they gonna do to you when you're an employee?

NO employer will call you around here.. I say call them and make sure they have the right number for you ... innocent yet allows them to say yes they want you or they have someone else

That's a good perspective Sharky. In MI the only reason why they didn't call was because they had a ego problem
So since I was going to be talking with a senior partner of the company, I figured that I would just be stroking his ego and making him feel important by calling him. IMO if a person that high up was still insecure then it makes me not fond of working for them.

I did e-mail back the recruiter, incase B asks. I hope that some miracle the other job can work out

I work for a large company. I am involved in hiring (not my entire job, but a good portion of it). When we want someone to have a phone interview with a higher-up, an admin sets the time, facilitates the communication with the candidate and makes sure the two ends connect. If you just leave it up to that higher-up person to make the call, they never will. Other things will come up and they will forget.

I have never tested anyone to "see if they want the job". Initiative is appreciated, but if we are really interested in someone we take the minimal steps to connect with them.

Whelp, I just got a phone call from them, apologizing. Apparently the guy had an emergancy call last night and had to go to one of his client locations. He was unable to make or receive cell phone calls at that time last night.

I guess I'll call back and use them as practise. I'm still waiting for the contract company to call back.

There are protocols that should be followed if an employer is going to miss an interview.

For example, having someone from their office contact the interviewee at the appointed time with and explanation and to reschedule. This is common courtesy.
Hang in there, the best is yet to come
