Please can someone tell me how much a 2 1/2 year old cat should sleep. Mysti is new to us. She sleeps most of the day, coming out to eat and potty, prowl a bit once in a while then back under the bedspread for more sleep.

She then sleeps with us most of the night too, getting up about 2 hours between 2-4 to roam.

She is a registered Bengal, I don't know if this breed sleeps more or not.

Should we be concerned? Maybe it is that she is in new home and notuse to us yet?

Answers appreciated.

you are so lucky that she even sleeps at all at night!!! Gracie use to be so active at night, jumping on the bed and biting my tootsies!!! and you couldn't even shut her out of the room because she would meow outside the door for HOURS until she was let in, she hated being alone!!! Kittys take catnaps sporadically throughout the day, so they must collect their days worth of rest that way, and i like to think that when they get up, its because they're checkin the house to make sure everythings ok

I just feel this is exceptionally too much. We hardly see her.

Shirell - cats do sleep alot, especially when they perceive there is nothing else to do.

Have you tried stimulating her with play? Roll up a foil ball for her to chase or a small fluffy thing on a stick or elastic usually does the trick.

It could be that she needs something to attract her interest.

If you're really concerned, and Mysti is actually lethargic and off her food etc, they you really should consult a vet.

She is eating like a horse. No problem there.

I am thinking maybe because she is not use to us yet and mourning for her old mom and dad? She was with Patrica and Bob all her life until now. She shows no interst in wanting to play yet as she does not yet want to have a lot to do with us so far. She has only been here 3 days.

She is still adjusting to you, let her get used to this new place first. Give her a catnip toy to play with, buy a large cat post that she can climb up and down on, or buy those wonderful cat ramps by Katwallks that attach to your walls so she can jump and climb and exercise. But give her some time to get used to her new surroundings.

I believe I read somewhere (Cats for Dummies, I think) that an adult cat will sleep somewhere between 16-18 hours a day, sleeping sporatically throughout the day and night.

I do agree with Hissy, though. Mysti is still getting used to a new home and new people. Just like with people, stress affects cats differently. I know when I get super stressed all I want to do is sleep. Maybe it's the same thing with Mysti - this is how she's controlling the stress level in her life right now.

I have heard this too, and this is typical of my cat Snowball. A lot of this time is spent in a light sleep rather than in a deep sleep. I'm sure the time spent sleeping varies from cat to cat.
