Cell phone service that allows you to see where someone is....

I can see the good and bad parts of this.

1. This would be good for a parent that wants to know where their child is.

2. This would be BAD for almost anyone else. My best friend doesn't need to know I'm at Target, Starbucks, Whole Foods, or the bookstore. My Mom doesn't need to know I'm in my apartment. My Dad doesn't need to know I'm out to eat.

What do you think?

I so need this for my "friend" oh man that would be sweet... I've been trying to catch him in a lie forever and that would guarantee it!!

But I do agree with you Heather, the only thing this would be useful for would be keeping track of your kids, everything else could be bad bad bad

That is something that would have to be heavily regulated. I.e. if children have the 4-button phones, then their parents automatically have access to their location.

However if the person is over 18, then there needs to be consent on both parties end and probably in writing (for legal reasons). I'm thinking about how many jealous ex-boyfriends out there that would wind up stalking their ex girlfriends or really vice versa (I've known more girls to do this than guys).

I thought it was a stalker's dream, too. I know some people who were trying to use Google Earth to see if their boyfriends' cars were at certain houses, etc., so I'm glad those shots aren't real time.

I'm sure there would be some way to "block" that.

We use the GPS chips in the cell phones given to employees to track where they are to give customers an idea of what time they will be there - but it is a company owned cell phone that remains in the truck and so tracks the truck, not the person.

Ours works slightly different, we have to enter the ID of the GPS into our mapping system and it shows us where they are rather than just showing all the phones as dots on a map

I think it is useful for children but for my own personal cell, I have it switched off (side point - you have to have written permission of the user and bill payer to turn the GPS on in the phones)

We are looking into buying the Helio phones which have the GPS tracking in them. But you can turn that off at any time.
