My friend has one, his name is Rock Star. This dog cracks me up. He has so much energy and is super friendly. I wouldn't be able to have one with Popsie because he's too old to deal with that kind of energy but maybe in the future when Popsie's gone (which hopefully will be a long, very long time from now) I could get a Chiuaua.

Be sure you read up on the breed. I know I probably don't need to tell you that, but I'd rather you think this completely through. Chihuahua puppies are fragile....and they're little. Many (but not all) can be nippy & bad with kids.

we have a chihuahua at work named Tako. He's a sweetie, but weighs 3 lbs and can walk through all of our fences.... he's a cutie, but easy to lose!

My best friend has one and OMG- she's so much to handle. She's very sensitive to the cold, the heat - the everything. And I know there are a few things health wise that she always has to keep up with too.
Its a VERY high maintance breed!

Johns brother has one as well and he's the same way. Its definately a dog I wouldn't want to get! Although they are cute, but way too much work!

i had a chihuahua..best bet is get him/her as a puppy and then socialize, socialize, socialize!!! because i worked at a vet and brought my puppy with me to work everyday, she became a great, friendly dog. they are only nippy if you don't socialize them early and continue to do so.
ALSO, don't fall for the "teacup" thing if you are buying...there is no such thing as a teacup in the natural state..just breeders who sacrifice the dogs health to make it smaller. either that or they happen to be the runt of the litter.
they call em "teacup" so they can sell them for twice the price...and these poor little ones don't have as strong of an ability to thrive. full grown, my chi was at a healthy eight pounds and did not suffer any consequences that the two to three pounders do..i saw it a lot at the vet. please don't buy what is claimed to be a "teacup" to avoid heartbreak.
other than that, they are wonderful dogs!

Chihuahuas are a great breed.

Overall healthy breed with not as many health problems as other breeds, they are a long lived breed. Do your homework, do not purchase from a back yard breeder, as they DO breed unhealthy and unstable dogs with problems since their only criteria for breeding is size. There is a lot more to producing a good Chi than size alone. There are a lot of sterotypes surrounding Chihuahuas, also just as many surrounding cats!
You have to know better and live with one of those devoted dogs to really understand them.

Their size does require special considerations (they can be up to 6 lbs. but some also reach more than standard, I have one that is over 6 lbs.) and also when they are puppies (like most puppies) they need very frequent feedings due to their size. Many like to be warm, sweaters and heated beds are appreciated. I like to be warm too so it isn't a problem

I don't like the "ankle-biter" dogs
But I do like the longhair chi's better then shorthair.

Be careful where you get your dog from. They are many backyard breeders or pet shops (which get their stock from puppy mills) that produce unhealthy dogs.

And DON'T buy into the "teacup" any kind of dog - they are runts and unhealthy. If you get one from a breeder, find a reputable breeder that breeds to the written standard of the breed - that especially includes SIZE.

My dad has a chiuhauha and she is a very sweet dog, very loud she barks alot, she thinks she's as big as the boxer Macy and I think that is a common thing with chis. Problem is with like Tiny she will attack dogs big enough to eat her and not think anything of it so you have to watch that they don't get theirselves in trouble. And Tiny gets cold very easily we have to keep the heat up a bit because of this and she goes to the front door and just stands and shivers when its cold. And when she gets nervous which is quite often she just shakes all over. But she gives you all her heart and she makes my dad happy she is nuts about him and she was supposed to be my dog. But she claimed him.
