I have had so many question in the past few days about my new kitty and here is another.

As you all may know I got revolution today from the vet. Well I just applied it and I did it all wrong. I parted the hair but it still got all over the fur. Also I think I put it a little too low and he is licking it off.
It took me so long to put it there and now I feel like its not even going to work
I dont even know why I am crying but I am concerned it wont even work now because he is EATING it! I wish the vet had shown me how to do this. I thought it was like a gel and would be easier.

Will it still work if he licks it off ??
Oh gee, he just keeps on licking
I thought it was higher but it was so hard getting it there, i did it as he was falling asleep and I thought it was higher

Was this an entire waste??

Did you get any of the revolution on his skin? or just on the fur? Unfourtuantley if he licks it off it won't work. Licking it off isn't going to be good for him, so if he's continuing to lick it off I would wash it off, call the vet and ask his/her suggestion about when it would be safe to try it again.

Don't be upset though honey! You tried your best....it's like giving a cat a pill, sometimes it takes some practice

I am not always perfect when I apply revolution and some does get on the fur. I have not had any bad reactions.

I don't think he will get sick if he licks it off, but mine have never really licked it off, but unfortunately it won't work either. You have to try and get right between his shoulder blades... it's the only place they can't lick.

I have a hard time doing my kitties too... so I just have them sit on me and stroke them for awhile... until they are relaxed and unaware that I'm about to 'get em'. Mmmmwwwaaahhhhhh <evil laugh>

Practice makes perfect... true. But they are smarter than you think. Once they are relaxed I sneak up on them!

Good Luck!

Well, i guess i will be calling the vet tomorrow. Regardless of what he says though, i dont want to put another application till next month just in case some stuff was absorbed through the skin.

I think my ernie looks a little sick though. he has been sleeping alot since i took him to the vet. The vet gave him another dose of meds even though he was immunized already....he said he needed another one but was ok with the rabies. After thinking about it, its a little weird. Is it normal for them to be sleepy like this after getting shots or do you think licking the revolution off had something to do with it??

I dont want to have to take him back to the vet as the last visit cost $137, and I still have to get a stool sample done for $50. In the last week i have spent about $350 - 400 on ernie and i dont want to spend another $50+ for a visit if I am over reacting.

Shots always make my cats feel bad for a couple of days. Also I never get the Revolution were it's supposed to go and they always end up licking at least some of it off. It doesn't hurt them and none of them ever have fleas so don't worry about your kitty. Just wait until next month and give it another go.

Aww don't worry so much

The first time I put it on Trout, same thing happened and I was bawling because I thought she would get sick from licking it. She didn't get sick at all though
I just kept an eye on her.

I would call the vet about putting more on the kitty..if some did get on the skin, you don't want too much on the kitty.

I don't think you need to worry too much, unless you notice him getting really sick. I missed the target on more than one occasion myself (although I use Advantage - not Revolution), and none of my cats ever got sick.
And Geronimo has a tendency to lick the other cats, and by accident he's licked the stuff off the other cats after it was applied: he did gag & puke a little afterwards
, but he never got sick. I think your kitty will be okay; just keep an eye on him, and if you notice anything drastic, contact your vet.

Don't feel too bad -- I think we all screw up the first time or two. You'd best wait a couple weeks before reapplying, though, so that what was ingested can work out of the system.

You need to put on cat's back behind his head so he can't get to it. Don't put extra on. Just wait until it's time for the next application, and have someone to help you with holding the cat.

I have to put Abby's on a little higher, say about the base of the neck where it meets his shoulders. He can lick it off too, if I go any lower. Why is it that it has to go right between the shoulders?

Don't worry missmun52, it will be allright. If he is healthy, he can tough out some of those things. Think about all of those little kittens born to stray and ferel mommies out there, I think to myself....how in the world do they make it sometimes? But I know we worry about our babies and if we are doing the right things....and you are. We are all here for you anytime!!

That's were I was told to put it... cat's are so flexible and nimble that they can lick almost any place on their body... right between the shoulder blades is nearly impossible to reach.

Read what jenniferd posted already, it does not go between the shoulders. Cats can easily lick there. It goes high on the back of the neck, almost back of the head.

This is how every vet that has put these treatments on cats in front of me does it. If in doubt, ask your vet next time you're in buying the treatments or during the next visit.

(ps - that's directed to other posters that keep saying shoulders, not you hollow
)

Since cat's shoulderblades aren't attached like humans' are, it's extremely difficult to actually locate a midpoint between a cat's shoulders because every time they move, the midpoint shifts around, and what looks like the middle in one position is way off to the side in another position. So, regardless of what the instructions might say, it's better, and it's easier, to apply it higher up, on the back of the neck like strange_wings says.

That makes sense. I think the "between the shoulders" instructions are based on dogs, which of course are built differently than cats.

Thank you for your post.  My husband and I just had the same thing happen to us. We totally missed the "correct spot" for applying Revolution.  I wish they had an oral version of this stuff because I know it is poison.  I was tempted to put her E-collar back on from when she was spayed, so she doesn't keep licking the spot.  I sure hope she is going to be OK.  I do feel better after reading some of the posts here.  Thank you all for your advice.

Yep, been there, done that!  It'll be okay and you'll figure it out.  I put it on the back of the head/neck, sorta even with the bottom of the ears.  I used to do it between the shoulder blades or just a bit higher until I saw one of my kitties licking it.  Also, get the nose of the applicator on the skin, squeeze the tube, then sorta use the nose to "massage" the liquid into the skin in an area about the size of a nickel.  Later on in the day, the fur will look like it dried with hair gel in it, so I always brush it out.

I 2nd the need for oral combo meds like Revolution. My cat Oksana loses her mind at the mere mention of topical meds. My cat is very small and limber. Anywhere she cannot reach to lick, she will lick her hind paw and get at the medicine that way.

I find the only way to keep meds on her for more than a couple of hours is to use an e-collar. She doesn't like it but she doesn't like the meds either so, she has to deal.

You guys are right also about trying to find the shoulder blades on a cat.  I'm used to dogs and there is a clear center between their shoulders.  I thought I was an idiot for not being able to find it.  Next month we'll try higher up at the base of the neck and if I have to I'll use an e-collar for a couple of hours.  I'm new at the whole kitty cat thing, as I've had dogs for years.  She is a total blast and so much fun and she gets along with my 2 German Shepherds pretty well. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this site!

I just struggled with this today too and was amused to see a thread about it.  (We are using Revolution for a few months just as a precaution with our foster cat since there was some evidence she had come into contact with fleas and earmites.)  I also got it too low and will aim higher next time.  Hopefully she didn't lick much off...she was getting pretty close though.
