...I'm going to find a part time retail position. I still want to keep some time for interviews and such, but so far nothing is working out with the recruiter and i'm starting to see positions I applied to refresh themselves on the job sites (in other words they were just feeder jobs to collect resumes).

It's taken me this long to mentally do this. I'm not trying to hark or belittle retail positions or people, believe, I had TONS of FUN working at the mall in college.

However, I'm 30, not 21, and I almost have a Masters degree, and am coming from a decent paying management position. Retail will in no way pay all the bills, but it will bring some money in. There's a shopping center not too far from me that has high-end brand name stores (so they'll pay more) with seasonal help available.

I'm basically going to apply to places that will "help" me out. I.e. There is a bridal shop not too far away that has a help wanted sign. So...maybe I can get a discount on my dress or my bridesmaids dresses(or free alterations
).
I'm also going to apply at Williams-Sonoma...maybe I can learn to cook -or be inspired to- while working there.
I figure that's the best way for me to mentally prepare myself.

Plus I just found out that my loans got returned because I'm less then 1/2 time at school right now. So I'm going to put my one class on credit card...one that has 0% APR for the next 15 months. So that will help me pay off a lot.

Thanks peeps...I needed to get that off my chest. I'm not exactly doing cartwheels, but I gotta do what I gotta do...for now.

I know it is hard but this is a good time of the year to be looking for that type of work. Good luck.

Have you heard more on the position you moved there for?

That's my plan if my unemployment runs out before I get a new job. Of course I'm hoping and praying and hoping and praying harder that it doesn't come to that.

No word on the job I came here for.

B hasn't heard back on anything he has applied to either, but most of his jobs apps had an "position open to apply to until XXXX" attached with them. Most are starting to close so I'm hoping that he gets a call or two next week

You're right though its a good time to apply...a month later and no-way.

I am 20 & had a hard time coming to grips with the fact that I had to work retail. I work Catalog Dept. At JCPenney....pay stinks....but I like my 20% discount & so far, it isn't as awful as I thought it would be.

I've been working in a restaurant for the past 10 years as a part-time job and while I work in "corparate" Americaq during the week, I actually enjoy having a no stress job- sometimes the kids drive me nuts, but
there's also a lot of us not so young folk too

I'm a cook cause I don't like dealing with the public that much, but if you don't mind dealing with customers, Jenney, I highly suggest trying waitressing. It's a harder job than retail but you can really can make decent money at it

Good luck! There is a lot of places already hiring for seasonal help. I wouldn't mind working at a Bath & Body Works or something like that

I hope you find something decent!

It's tempting to waitress as most of the restaurants around here have dinner prices of $20+
I was imagining a table of 2 couples, $80 + drinks, so maybe $120...$24 in tips right there!

The tax filing would be horrible though!
Plus I don't know how much I really like the public...

ETA: Well I started applying to some local stores that you can only fill out online. They had a question on there saying "You're showing a customer where an item is located and you pass an aisle that has bottle of soda spilled all over the floor...what would you do? A, B, C or D"

I think I'll just stick to fun retail. Ooo...there's a Pottery Barn there, Anne Taylor LOFT, too bad...J. Crew doesn't arrive until November
.

tax filing's not bad, most restaurants today have a computer system where you claim your tips on the computer.

I couldn't work there-- I wouldn't have a paycheck!
