We are due to get new living room stuff and I wonder what is the best material to look for, as far as cats and their scratching. Does anyone have leather, how is that?I have a chair I bought at a yard sale for the cats and it is the strongest fabric I have ever seen. It just doesn't rip. But I have no clue what it is made out of. Princess Gina is fine, she is not destructive at all, she sharpens her claws very delicately! I am working with little Kitto now and he is doing very well. But our son has a cat here, Doodle, who is BAD, as far as scratching goes. I don't think he really worked much with her, LOL, he's 23. I have also heard those nail cap things are good, too.

I recently just got new furniature (to be with us Nov. 1st!) and I got microfiber. I've heard that its the best for people with cats. Its protective for scratches & to clean it because of cat hair, all you need to do is wipe it down with a rag & it all comes off.
I know people w/ cats that have microfiber furniature & they say its a must!

I'm quite anxious to find out myself!

Also, a lot of people will tell you that Soft Paws are also the way to go. I've never had a scratching problem with my boys, but if I did, I'd sure invest in them, I've heard nothing but wonderful things about them!

I read in Cat Fancy not long ago that fake suede (I believe it's the microfiber stuff) is the best material for furniture in cat homes... something about it gives cats no desire to scratch it... we have 2 love seats and a couch made out of it and Oliver's never scratched them... we have a recliner made of fabric that's kind of bumpy (I have no idea, haha) and he used to scratch at the one corner - soft paws and feliway spray quickly stopped it though

Ok, I actually still have that issue of Cat Fancy, haha (randomly came across it in the pile of crap next to my desk) and the fabric is called Ultra Suede... and it's what my parents' furniture is made of... it's really nice - soft and comfy and very stain resistant, cleans easily and we keep a rubber bristled brush on hand to quickly clean off pet hair (my mom's somewhat allergic to Oliver) and the best thing about it is the cat has no desire to scratch it! I know it comes in lots of colors too - my parents' is like a powder blue-ish... have fun furniture shopping!

We have a Sage Green microfiber couch from La-Z-Boy. We love it. Stimpy spends a good part of his day on it.
No problems with the cats on it. They are front declawed (not our doing) but still dig in with their back claws to take off. No tears at all or holes either. It sounds terrible when they do it, but that's about all.

And a tip---Green is one of the best colors for disguising pet hair.
Our chocolate colored ottoman shows the tiniest amount of hair.

We'd like to get a stand alone chair (as we just have the couch and ottoman) and it will also be microfiber. That stuff is awesome!

PS-When picking our couch I was also thinking "Can I see my cats sleeping on it?"
Stimpy loves the cushions and Raven has a nest on the back of the couch. Nabu likes both spots.

I also have a microfiber Lane sectional which Junior has yet to use as a scratching post. Junior loves sitting on the top of it and like littleraven7726 said, Junior digs in his rear claws when he takes off. He also likes jumping to the top of the sectional from the back and occasionally needs to grip with his rear claws to push himself up the rest of the way. It sounds horrible but I have yet to see a puncture and all scratches just disappear with a sweep of my hand across the fabric.
