I've had 5 yr old George since May. His purr isn't the normal sounding motor but almost a stuffy nose or heavy breathing sound. Since I've gotten him, he has always sounded like this - its not until I'm around another cat that I realize how different he sounds. Normal? Should I be concerned and take him to the vet? He's not sneezing unusually and he seems pretty "normal" other wise. I can tell the raining weather makes him kind of lazy (the weather we've been having lately - it makes me lazy too
) but again, nothing too unusual. Thanks for your thoughts!

I don't think it's anything to worry about. My three cats have three different-sounding purrs. One of them makes a purr similar to what you describe, although she also does a "normal" purr.

Where whiskers abound.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, one of my cats does not purr at all, thats right, not at all.

Maybe something went amiss when her 'purr box' was made.

not an emergency but I would have it checked... see cats purr out of contentment but also fear and pain

How soon is George's next vet appointment? A gurgling sounding purr could be the sign of a sinus problem. But if he's had it since May and you haven't noticed any other signs (poor eating, lethargic, etc), then I might hold off for a bit, but definitely ask your vet the next visit.
