My boyfriend takes care of the stray cats at his work. Recently one had kittens and completely abandoned them. She wouldn't go near them at all and eventually took off. They waited 24 hours and now we're taking care of them. This was 3 days ago. I think the kittens are about 4 days old but we aren't sure. The ears are popped up, eyes still closed, and embillical piece is still attached. They are eating A LOT. I'd say they eat around 5-10 mL every 2-5 hours. They're tummies are nice and round and they crawl around a lot. We think they're very healthy but I was concerned about they eyes not opening yet and how often we should be handling them. I read on some sites that we should hold them besides just feedings. Anyone have any suggestions on what else we should be doing? I've cared for kittens before but they were 5 weeks when we got them, and now my parents have them. We'd like to keep the ones we found.

Thanks!

I just took in an abandoned kitten too and it's now a 12 days old. I got the kitty when it was 4 days old as well, The umbilical cord actually dropped off on 7. The ears are all popped up now and will wiggle during feeding time. Its eyes are still closed and I am also eagerly waiting for them to open.

I bottle feed and cuddle them quite a lot since I've been reading that the more contact it has with people, the more socialize it will become since it's an orphaned and does not have its mommy nor littermate.

I checked the eyes are regularly to make sure there's no pus or liquid and clean its little bottom everytime after peeing/pooping. But it still smells...hehe..

They are peeing and pooping a lot! We rubbed their tummies as much as we can. They meow every time you touch them and instantly start suckling so that's why I was wondering if we should handle them more.

Yeah, they do eat a lot!!! and Poop a lot too!

I think suckling is a normal reflex since newborn suckle on their mom's nipple constantly and the way I do it is to let it suckly on my fingertips. My kitty doesn't like bathroom time and scream a lot when i rub it's tummy and genital. But after it peed/poop, it settles down and when I rub its body, it tend to cuddle me even more and sometimes fall asleep on my palms.

I think there are other more experienced than me since I am a new *mommy* so I would love to hear what others have to contribute.

I try to get them to fall asleep with me but they like roam around the entire time especially if I lay down with them. They sleep together and we still have a heating pad under there. Any suggestions on when we should discontinue the heating pad? I have them in a dresser drawer right now as well. I think you have to wait until they develop the "shiver" mechanism. They are twitching when they sleep so that's a good start haha

I raised an orphan a few months ago, her eyes didn't open for 11 days, I kept the heating pad until she was about 2 weeks old, I held her and snuggled her alot, but she was an only, she also cried when I rubbed ther bottom, but after she peed or pooped she was fine. It sounds like you both are doing a good job
, I too was a first time mommy to a kitten, It was a little scary at first, but I have never had such a loving snuggle cat, she is wonderful

I handle kittens from the time they are born - at least a few times a day. Hold and pet them.

Eyes can open from about 5-14 days. My rexes opened early - usually 5-8 days. Some take longer. Sounds like you are doing well.

Although my kittens weren't abandoned, i do have 6 babies right now.

Some of the kittens opened their eyes within the first 3 days, the rest took around week or so for their eyes to open.
They were born the 14th of sept so they are almost 5 weeks old.
