Mostly suspenseful with a bit of violence. The end was such a great twist. It finally wasn't a predictable movie.
Was it The Messengers?

Yea that movie was pretty good. I'm out of the norm here - I like the newer "horror" movies. I love all the gore and guts. I LOVE the SAW series, they are my favorite - the pig mask scared me. I love Hostel and Hostel 2. House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects were majorly messed up. Anything newer I'm a fan of.

Saw 1 & 2 were the only movies of the series I enjoyed. I hate to say it, but "horror" flicks have so much potential, but are just ridiculous.
I.e. Turistas, Cabin Fever, Wrong Turn, etc...

What about Amityville Horror? That's a classic! Oooo...or The Shining.

Now those are true horror movies. I'm a fan of the new age gore ones but there's nothing like a good make you jump movie rather than "let's see how many people we can dismember in 90 min." kinda movie.

Yep, I personally like the ones that mess with your psyche

I also like The Exorcism and other horror movies based on the Catholic religion (Stigmata, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and bummer...I can't think of more...)

Watching the robins sing!
One of my favorites is the original version of The Haunting - black and white, early 60's.
It stars Julie Harris and is based on a novel by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House. It has held up very well over time, again, without the blood and gore of current
violent horror films!

I've always thought The Creature from the Black Lagoon was one of the scariest made. I watched it back in the summer and it made me realize how today's scarey movies are nothing compared to the old ones!

Oooh, that was a good one. It did actually freak me out. You know how they make the ghost move real jerky and stuff... I hate that, it's so dang scary. Exorcism of Emily Rose got me too. I had the creepy crawlies. Had to leave the light on while watching. lol

Heather - I think Black Sheep was intended to be a comedy. Was it?
If you liked Brain Dead (Dead Alive in the US) then, look for Peter Jackson's "Meet the Feebles" and "Bad Taste" - they are indeed in bad taste.

Amityville Horror scared me! The 70s one was scarier than the remake. It terrified me!

I don't like the newer remakes that use the same computer graphics style as The Ring, etc.

I thought The Haunting and House on Haunted Hill were pretty good.

Zombie movies really scare me but I love to watch them.

the scariest movie i can remember watching was I Saw What You Did. i'm not sure whether it was that it was incredibly scary, or that i was about 16, or both...
i also much prefer suspense to gore.

I just have to tell a funny story just to give everyone a good laugh.

First of all I'm really not a fan of scary movies, especially those with ghosts and or zombies.... So my boyfriend put in the movie "Shawn of the Dead" and I said "turn that off, I don't want to watch it!!!!" I was terrified for the first few minutes of the show until weird things started happening. I asked him what on earth kind of movie is this!! I had never heard of this movie till then but I just love it! He laughed his head off because I was so scared of a COMEDY......
I felt like a deewb

The horror movie I want to see right now is "Two Sisters" (least, I think that's the title). Even though I can't stomach scary movies, my roommate says she'll be there if I need to sleep in the livingroom with the lights on...

I do love "Rose Red" though. Though it's not very scary.

I really can't handle the blood and gore movies. They just turn my stomach. I tend to like ghost stories like "The Others" or suspense like Hitchcock movies (Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo).

And then I have always had a fondness for the old Vincent Price films like "The Masque of the Red Death". Probably because they spooked me when I was young. I remember not being able to sleep for several nights after seeing "the Pit & the Pendulum" because I was afraid of being walled up alive somewhere.

Oooo that was a good one! I'm watching the remake of The Omen right now. I'm gonna watch the original at some point when I'm done. I have about 45 minutes left, and I've really only jumped once. And it really scared me. I'm a baby about getting scared though - so EVERYTHING scares me. When i first saw SAW, that scared me with the pig mask. The Grudge scared me even though it was lame. I could imagine that kid sitting by my bed just doing that noise. Even When A Stranger Calls scared me when I first saw it in theaters. I think that was because it was something that could actually happen in real life.I get scared so easily but I still love those kind of movies. Just cant watch em by myself or in the dark.

I've seen them! I love his movies.

Isn't it funny that he's a "serious" director now?

We are getting more movies tonight so I'll be sure to update the thread.

I second that, the original film is superb, the atmosphere is really what a good supernatural horror should be about!

I also recommend The Asphyx (1973), I've not seen it for a while but I remember loving it. Also a big fan of Guillermo del Toro - not the big name stuff like Blade (can't stand it!) that he was involved in, but the three great films he did - Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, and Pan's Labyrinth are excellent.

I am sure more recommendations will come to me later, if so I'll post them here!
