Where is the discussion of the article you linked to?

I just want to say that if the middle classes only pay 10% tax in the US, would any of you like to sponsor me to move there?

Cindy appears to be the only American paying 10% Federal taxes. The rest of us pay a lot more.

To be on-topic: I would FULLY support the Burman 4% surcharge idea, which would alleviate the AMT burden for the majority of the upper-range mid-class tax payers.

You will get your wish when the Democratic candidate walks in the White House. A trillion dollar price tag, holy cow. I guess that we can count on Bush's tax cuts expiring in 2010, can't we?

Yeah, I'm a tax cheat.

I haven't followed up on the article yet, but my impression was that the responses were very partisan, and therefore suspicious? Sorry, but I suspect that some posters are being deliberately disingenuous? A lot of people posting here are probably so upset about being deliberately misled by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et. al., that anything they now claim won't be believed? Attacking their opponents (e.g., Kerry) doesn't cut it, either, unless you can back up your claims with facts not published by the US government, that is, the Bush Administration, whose credibility is just about zero.

Don't know what you're all complaining about lol. We pay over 50% taxes, and if you put social security and all that jazz into it, it's almost 60%. That's for around $60k a year too, btw (hubby's income, not mine). We'd gladly take 28% taxes anyday

That said, we get excellent medical care, education and a relatively good social safety network all around. Not to mention a huge bill here to be paid for very real defense expenses. Oh, and gas costs a lot more over here too. About 30% more expensive.

I hope I didn't derail the thread off trach again (mods, my wrists are out for a slap!). Didn't read the original artice, just the replies.

I'd gladly pay that much in taxes if it meant health care & education. Considering that about that much of my salary after graduation will be taken up paying back student loans!

And that's another reason that middle class people are starting to struggle. A lot of us have to pay for our educations out-of-pocket, which pretty much means taking out loans, which means that upon graduation we have a heavy debt burden. This delays people buying houses, even having children.

If it were a fair balance, the middle class would be able to grow their incomes without having to dig ever deeper into their pockets to pay tithe to Uncle Sam.

The rich really don't have to worry about taxes - it doesn't HURT them they way it hurts us little people.

The original intent of the AMT has not keep pace with inflation, has barely been index or revised since its inception and is now taxing people that it was never meant to tax. This should have been address before cutting the estate tax (I will NOT call it the propoganda death tax.)

I have no problem taxing the rich more than the rest of the country. In 2001 83% of the US wealth was held by only 20% of the nation. I heard yesterday on the talk radio I listen to that the gap has only gotten wider between the wealthy and the middle class and poor. So proportionately they should pay more. To put it in perspective for me I make twice as much as my husband. If we split our household expenses in half and claim that is equal he would go into debt, unable to pay his share. Whereas I would have plenty of money to go out and play or do whatever I wanted. Hardly seems fair. And is not like we are not working equally hard or he is looking for a handout. Therefore I like the the 4% tax proposal that would have 58% of the tax needed paid by people that make over $1 million rather than the 8% it would be now. Just seem fairer proportionately.
