I'm noticing more and more brands being made in Thailand. I just recently bought a couple cans of Avoderm at Petsmart to try, and they are made in Thailand. Solid Gold, Sheba, Meow Mix are all made in Thailand.

So - how safe do we feel feeding our cats products from Thailand? I confess to knowning next to nothing about that country. I'm just so nervous about anything anymore - it's hard to know what is the right thing to do.

I'm feeding several of those foods. To be honest, I probably wouldn't but some days it's all Raven eats.
He's terminally ill, and he gets whatever he will eat at this point. After he goes to the bridge I will switch back to mostly FF, Natural Balance, and Pro Plan. (Stimpy likes NB and FF loaf)

Most of the higher-priced wet foods available in Europe are made in Thailand, too. One argument a producer gave was that organic meat could be produced more cheaply there, with the exception of organic beef, so the company had its beef wet produced and canned in Uruguay.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I guess I will give them the Avoderm as a treat now and then (which is all I intended with it anyway), but I don't think I'll buy any more.

Tiki cat is a brand that uses wildcaught whole seafood and is canned in Thailand...I like the brand and it's quality very much.

I only give very little fish based product to my cats -  I  am concerned that Thailand and the asian markets are well known for a huge illegal dog meat trade.  Until they get that under control, I do not trust any food product from that region.

I feel that I have to answer to this.

I live in China and yes, Chinese people eat dogs. Thailand in the other hand is another matter. It's a different country with different quality standards. There are many products in the Chinese market imported from Thailand and they're clean and well preserved.

I eat fish in China, yes from 'contaminated' waters as everybody thinks, everyone here does it and people is pretty healthy , even more than in my own country where the rivers and ocean are supposed to be more clean. I think there is a lot of gossip and misinformation on the internet about Asian countries in general, but believe me, it's not as horrible as it seems.

We feed our cats Tiki Cat, a food made in Thailand to human food grade standards (and my cats love it). I have spent time in Thailand - they do not eat dogs here, and the food standards are very high. I think you can feel confident that cat food made in Thailand is safe and ethically made.

More info about pet food from Thailand: Are Pet Foods Made in Thailand Safe?

  • The USFDA recognizes the Thai FDA
  • The plant where Weruva is made is USFDA certified
  • While 100 brands of U.S. pet foods were recalled in 2010, none from Thailand were recalled
  • Thailand provides a large portion of the fish consumed in the U.S.
  • Pet foods produced in Thailand are subject to greater scrutiny than in the U.S.

Another interesting factor is that Thailand has a government agency called the Department of Livestock Development (DLD), which is similar to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The difference is, the DLD is stricter than the USDA because (unlike the U.S.) food exportation is very important to Thailand’s economy. So it’s within the country’s best interest to maintain the highest standards – and an overall stellar world reputation – at all times.
