Ok, so I still have to feed 3 three pound bags of Blue Spa Select and I do like the company and it was special ordered so although Sharky has told me it has too many grains I won't send it back because that would cost me shipping money. Better to feed the expensive food, balance it with canned and use it up and change diets when I run out of the food.

But after I get through these 3 bags, I have found something else that I may switch my cats too because I need something to jumpstart a change in their metabolism. Throughout the years that I've had my cats since 2003 when I adopted them from the San Diego Department of Animal Services, they have been increasingly gaining weight. Spotty won't eat wet food exclusively and he's my heaviest cat at 17 pounds, a big jump from 11 pounds when I got him at the shelter and my Rosie who started out at about 9 pounds weighs about 14, so I am in serious need of putting them on a diet as this is an increased risk of future health problems for them in the future and I would be devastated to lose either one of my beautiful cats early. Spotty is sweet, lovable and affectionate and Rosie is my princess diva kitty to be admired for her looks, but only her favorite people can pet her.

Evo hasn't worked because it has so many calories. Wellness Core, also high in calories but I found a very interesting grain free dry food relatively moderate in calories called Instinct Rabbit Meal Formula at 474 calories per cup, that's only 237 calories per half cup and with wet as a combo I can feed a lower amount of calories, my vet had once told me before she moved Spotty needs about 220 calories per day and Rosie about 180. They are indoor apartment lifestyle type kitties.

So what do you think of this food and what are the pumkins seeds for, I wonder?

I chalked all the "weird" ingredients in Instinct to going with the tapioca....to keep the kibble together. In all honesty, I have no idea!

Tapioca is the ONLY known legume NOT to cause allergy in humans ... theroy cats wont be either ...

pumpkin seeds can assist with fiber , colon cleasing , and possibley extra viatimins...

my worry is the clay... I know the reason it just doesnt make me terribley happy to put internally what many say it not good if ingested from a box

RUn this by your vet ... 500 mg l carnitine pill from the health food store ... dose likely needs adjusting as I havent see this high in ANY food ... but it aids in fat metabolism and lean muscle mass but many foods only have under 200mg /kg or 20 mg per cup

I just e-mailed the company asking them to explain why the cat food has clay in it. That concerns me too. Sharky, if you know something about it please explain why anyone would put clay in cat food. Very strange.

L-carnitine, good idea, I'll discuss it with my vet. Hope he or she (I have to change vets now because the other ones went out of business and moved to another state) doesn't tell me to feed a Hill's diet. Holistic vet is not an option, must see a vet walking distance from my home as I'd hate to torture my cats with a bus ride. I have no problem special ordering a good cat food, especially since dry food is not so expensive. Trying out various canned but most natural brands have been rejected. On and off they eat Iams and Avoderm, Purina Pro-plan (not the natural stuff) still their favorite. Tried Wysong au jus chicken, that was a hit, but I know it's not a complete diet but every now and then I'll feed it.

I love the Only Natural Pet store www.onlynaturalpet.com they ship things fast to me and I never have to sign for my packages as I'm often at work when things get to me.

I've looked at that site for reviews, but I'll never buy anything from them. To each his own, but those prices are awful.

The question to ask them would be is it sodium montmorillonite(aka bentonite) or calcium montmorillonite. It should be the latter which is an edible clay, not the clay that is used for making litter. You can buy calcium montmorillonite as a supplement.

I just found this site explaining more about calcium montmorillonite: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/clay2.htm

I have a 6 year old kitty that was very overweight (17 or so pounds) for her body frame her belly was huge and she walked slow and didn't look her best to me.

I switched to 50 wet 50 dry diet. I was very obsessed with what is the best in terms of dry food for my cats. I tried EVO, made her gain weight, CORE was too expensive for me, there was no way I'd buy that regularly, Raw Instinct had so many crumbles in the food, my cats wouldn't eat them, so a lot of wasted food was thrown out.
I am still not convinced that grain-frees help cats lose weight.

In the end I went with really simple formula foods, California Natural and Nutro Natural Choice.
They are not overly high caloric, and wet in itself helped her lose the weight.

I think its been about 6 months now? I'm not certain, she is a lean machine that plays with my other kitty now and isn't afraid of moving like she was before.
She has a huge spay away, that will probably never go away, but she is at her ideal weight now, and I think its WET food that helped her, not dry.

I am on a budget, if I wasn't Id feed 100% wet food.
