Seems yet another Televangelist is in the news accused:

Quote:
of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors' expense, including numerous home remodelling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter's senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay.

She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as "underage males."

Oral Roberts and his organization has been a joke here in Oklahoma for a looooong time. Remember when ole Oral went up in his prayer tower and said that God told him if he didn't raise 9 million dollars he would "call him home"? He was actually holding himself for ransom. He didn't get the 9 mil, so God was nice enough to change his mind.

It irked me today when the news report I was watching referred to the Oral Roberts organization as "evangelicals." I'd consider them "hucksters."

People who make a profit off of religion make me want to vomit. I don't know of a single belief system that encourages people to aim for material wealth, and yet some people still manage to take advantage.

Somehow, it's also usually the people who preach hatred and fear rather than actually following the religion they purport to represent.

And Coaster, indeed, although I'd go so far as to outright call them frauds.

Now that would have been weird Did god happen to tell him why he needed the money?

To build his hospital, I think, wasn't it? A grandiose project. Quite an impressive building, but I think I remember reading that it was mostly empty.

Yep, he built a huge hospital where cancer (I think) was going to be cured. Unfortunately there was already an over abundance of hospitals in Tulsa, so his new one didn't help matters any.

Ok, a little local joke. Here is a picture of the some-what famous 'praying hands' statue on the ORU campus.

So one day the hands fall apart. All kinds of engineers look at it and try to fix it. No one can figure out how to get the hands back together. They just about give up when a little boy walks up and say "I can fix it." He goes and stands underneath the hands. Gets a quarter out of his pocket and flips it up between the hands. The hands snap back together.

It is a little better as a visual joke where you use your own hands snapping together to deliver the punch line......

And that folks is how most people here in Oklahoma feel about Oral Roberts.
