so, i just got my first kitten from a pet store. she is about 4-5 weeks old, which is very young i know. not knowing exactly what to feed her, i talked to a woman that has had a few kittens before and she told me to feed her canned wet kitten food, so taking her advice i`ve been giving her just that. recently i mixed some dry food with the powder cat milk, and she now has diarrhea. i dont know if its because of the cat milk, or because of something else.

My thoughts are that you should get your kitten to a vet immediately.
It might not even be weaned yet?
Please don't wait.

the guy at the petstore said she was on dry food...

then again he was selling a kitten that was way too young to be sold...

I agree with xocats ... a vet visit is called for any time you bring a new pet into the house, whether or not they are sick.

The diarrhea may be from the abrupt change in foods or it may also be because of intestinal parasites. It is best with one so young to err on the side of caution and get the little one into the vet to be seen.

You can try to feed her a little boiled chicken meat (no onions or seasonings) mixed with a little plain white rice (not instant or fast-cooking - get the long cooking type and boil it for 20 minutes) - puree the chicken and water from boiling that along with the rice - make it into a thick pasty gruel and serve warm, not hot. It will help to bind up the stool and settle the stomach upset.

ok.

so, give her some chicken and rice(as stated above), and more then likely stay away from the milk?

I wouldn't give her any milk, but that's just me ... at this age (even if she is only 4 or 5 weeks along), a good, high-quality kitten food in canned and dry varieties is fine. If she gets picky about eating, use the milk as an enticement only, or you can also try meat-only baby food if you have to. But I don't like giving cats milk, even if it is "cat milk" and doesn't contain lactose.

i heard that cats are lactose intollerant, but i didnt think that they could be that way with the kitty milk. i`m learning alot right now lol.

Aw the poor little one! I hope she's feeling better soon! I gave my girls a little KMR stage 2 when I first brought them home. They were about 10-11 weeks at the time and didn't have it for long, but I think it helped them transition to their food better since they'd just been separated from their mom.

Just wanted to add my two cents...besides the excellent advice you've been given about seeing a vet, change of food, etc. Stress is a major factor in causing diarrhea as well. She's really young, poor baby. And she's just been taken to a strange place with strange people and strange food. The KMR will definitely help. Sharky gave me this advice with the 5 week old orphaned kitty I found two months ago and it worked like a charm. He had normal poos the first day, but after that, runny. Definitely a combo effect of new food (I support canned now that I've read up on this site and can do right by this little guy from the begining) and a new environment.

But definitely the vet check. Let us know what happens. You can't get anything sooner than Friday? Recovery vibes and hurry 'till Friday vibes for you and your baby.

And this definitely is the greatest place for info on kitties. People here are amazing!
