What did the Vet do to my babies?

So today I took my two cats to the vet for This reason. While there, the vet insisted on them getting rabies shots. I told him that when I adopted, I was told they had ALL their shots (in March), and he still gave them both rabies shots because I didn't have the paperwork to back up that they had the shots. I had to go to work so the vet offered to keep them there in a cage until I got off. Unfortunately, they were housed in a cage right next to some jerk of a cat that constantly growled and hissed.

When I picked them up they looked terrified. Now that we are home, they are growling and hissing at each other, which NEVER happened before. I am very very worried. Did the shot or the mean cat or their day away from home have anything to do with this? They've only been home for about a half an hour, but I don't like whats going on. Please help!

I just realized that this should go in the behavior section. It can be moved by a mod if they'd like.

Poor babies! They are probably stressed out, and they might not recognize each other's smells right now. You might try dabbing a little vanilla extract on the base of their tails and rubbing some on their cheeks to get them smelling alike again. Hope all is back to normal soon!

I think they are just stressed from the time they spent at the Vet's office. Just give them some time to relax and feel secure again and they'll settle back down.

I moved this to the behavior section.

You can also look into a Feliway diffuser which will help them destress.

Definitely put some vanilla on each of them as the above poster said! One of my cats had to spend a week at the vet and the same thing happened when I brought him home. I put vanilla on both cats and all was well within a day!

They just don't smell like themselves. Cats recognize each other by smell.

The vanilla provides a neutral smell that is ok with the two of them.
