cry of the ginger cat

I see her between the bars of my cage. She draw nearer and my heart races. Will she touch me? Will she be the one - the one of the hundreds of people that pass through - that will take me home? My ginger ears prick forward and I rub my side against the wires. When I see her looking down at the yowling kitten in the cage beneath me my hear sinks from where it was bobbing earlier. I’m not young and sweet like the kittens that get brought here so often. Only every so often do I get second glances.

I hear the kittens door open, and the screaming stops immediately, replaced by a soft purr. I know the kitten deserves a home just as much as I do, but I can’t help wishing someone would hold me and cuddle me; talk to me in comforting voices like she was to the kitten. All I want is someone to love me. The shelter volunteers all do, I know, but there is only so much one person can do in a room full of cats that crave to be touched.

“Sh, you’re coming home with me, little one,” she murmurs, running her finger down the kittens nose. It closes its eyes and relaxes in her arms. I wish someone would hold me like that.

Only a few short minutes later, she ushers the kitten out of the door and into the waiting car. I press my face against the bars, ignoring the fur that had stuck there from many occasions of trying to reach out to people, and am just able to catch a last fleeting glimpse of the car pulling out and disappearing.

A small mew of distress escapes from me and I finally return to my blanket. Maybe next time it would be my turn.

*

I wrote this on an urge a few minutes ago for "my" cats at the shelter. May you all find forever homes soon, babies!

Very beautiful and heartwrenching. You should send it to some shelters I bet it'd make lots of people think about that older cat in the cage above the kitten....

Oh that was beautiful. So touching. Makes me think about my Oreo. She was an older cat amongst kittens. I like to say that she picked me. When I was opening the cages to pet the cats, Oreo literally jumped in my arms and scrambled, holding onto my shoulders as if to say, "pick me...pick me, please".
I was not initially drawn to her but after that, how could I say no?

Sorry for the side track it just really struck me. Good job and I agree that you should share that with others.

Most people who pick the kittens never get to see the look of heartbreak on the adults faces....Flash, my baby girl, always makes me want to cry.

This is a very good idea. I really think it would encourage people to take a look at the older cats in the shelters, who need homes too. Beautifully written

I would also like to take this to the rescue shelter that I volunteer at. Can we copy it with your name?

There was a cat like that at one of the shelters I went to. Her name is Pillow and she was the most gorgeous girl I'd ever seen...as soon as I sat down she curled up right in my lap and began to purr.
Oh, and thank you

I know. If I had the money, time, and resources to spare, I would! But unfortunately I don't, and I have a sneaking suspicion nobody does.

I would PM you my name, but I don't have the ability to PM. Why don't you just put Abby then? Or maybe my username from TCS...
I'm not sure. Or you could put anonymous or uknown.

I will put Abby on it then, if that's alright with you. You deserve the credit for a beautifully written poem. Thank you for letting me use it.

Of course you can! I'd be honored. And that's absolutely wonderful! How old were they (the ones that were adopted)?

I always feel bad for the older cats that don't get adopted out.
I've already decided the next time I get a cat it will be an older one from the shelter. I might get a kitten to go with it though.
