I have 2 resident cats and we just got a new kitten a few weeks ago. The kitten is 9 weeks old. Of course, the kitten wants to play with the 2 older ones (who are NOT interested). Simon reacts the way I would expect, hissing, swatting and generally putting the kitten in his place.

Max (all 13 pounds of him) runs and hides from a 2 pound kitten! He seems intimidated. Why is he reacting like that and how do I stop the kitten from torturing him?

[I know the kitten will calm down a bit once he's neutered in a few weeks, but still. . . ]

It's okay. Max sounds like he is not used to kittens. He'll come around.

Other than keeping the young one in a cage, there is nothing you can do to stop him from wanting to play (it is not torture) with Max.

I haven't had much experience with introducing cats but I guess your kitten wants to play and he probably can't understand why Max runs away from him! Did you introduce them gradually?

Maybe keep the two separate if you're not in the house and then when at home distract the kitten when it looks like he's going for Max? If Max sees you playing with the kitten within the vicinity he might gradually come out to investigate what is going on; usually a cat's curiosity gets the better of them!
